Gas Safe and Flame Out Devices

That sounds like an elaborate way of not doing a proper job.
A gas alarm is a sensible item to fit if you have lpg anyway. Leaks can occur quite apart from escapes due to burners blowing out. Linking it to a shut off solenoid is just a further sensible addition

The vendor of the boat (with N&G insurance) and my previous 2 boats (with Y Yacht insurance) have required inspection and Gas Safe certificates For the whole installation. This is for seagoing sailing cruisers, nothing to do with BSS.

I wonder why? They've never asked me for one and I've not had a survey for 7 or 8 years either.

There were thousands of Vanessa and Neptune cookers sold for decades without these devices, perhaps folk were just more careful then but I can not recall a great number of cooker explosions..

Cooker explosions of themselves no, i can't think of any either

But i can recall at least two gas explosions on inland waterways boats due to cookers without FFDs being on and unlit. I can't recall all the details after all these years but one at least was fatal involving a liveaboard towpath lurker up Manchester way

We had a Vanessa in our caravan with no problems for many years, but you did have to be careful about drafts if the burner was turned down too low.
Our last boat had a Vanessa also, and the rest of the gas installation was awful and needed replacing. The gas engineer, Will Hayward, said I won’t touch it unless you are replacing the cooker!

I have just replaced the old Flavel with an Aqua Marine Neptune 4500. The difference is chalk and cheese. There is the flame failure device fitted. There is electronic ignition, so no gas match needed. Then the efficiency of the burners, grill and oven is far superior. It is slightly wide to fit, but well worth the change. If you can wait until November to buy, then use the Black Friday to get the best price. I bought from Marine Supermarket. I would also recommend fitting a marine gas regulator as they are different to the caravan version as they will vent the gas into the gas locker to drain overboard.
