<< so it is sometimes difficult to ensure that the top part of a fitting is actually covered with the solution. >>
A tip : take a large bowl half full of water, add a large squooge of washing up liquid, now beat the mix hard with your hand and create vast quantities of bubbles. Then take a double handfull of the bubbles ( no liquid) and 'wrap' the bubbles around / on top of the fitting / pipe - any leak will show instantly and no covering problems; very little liquid on the item - easy !!
10mm soft copper pipe can be bought with a plastic covering which is quite handy for boats.
On the matter of sealants - never mind Corgi or whoever - a very standard instruction in specifications is ' supply and fit xyz all to manufacturers instructions '
The standard instruction from Prestex etc. is that light machine oil is to be used on compression fittings - nothing else.
