Gas pipe connection

One of the boats in my club had braided hose as the final connection. Braid fine, gas leaking out. Inner rubber tube had an unseen split and gas was pouring out.

Used plain rubber hose as the final connection on my boat. Routed and supported to avoid abrasion. Passed inspection.

(Hint: warming the ends of the rubber pipe before fitting makes it a lot easier)

Somehow, I think many people cling to the irrational belief that braided hose is magically "safer" than plain hose, despite the fact that it can't be inspected properly.

The hose connecting the cooker to the gas supply SHOUD BE braided hose, because that will protect the hose from any chafing (assuming that the cooker is gimballed).

As has been previously said orange hose should only be used from the gas botttle (regulator) to the pipework by way of purpose designed fittings on the pipework.

Just trying to clamp a rubber tube to a piece of gas pipe using two jublilee clips is asking for trouble.

In practice a number of surveyors (who probably don't know what they're talking about) condemn braided hose as "preventing visual inspection for cracking". In effect it probably boils down to the preference of your underwriter.

I'm puzzled by the reference to "black" hose being superior, because as it has been conveyed to me the orange hose is that supplied for use with propane on outside sites - it's therefore considered better for high-pressure and arduous duty. Hence the reason for suppliers only stocking orange hose.

Which just goes to show that much of what is published on this site is opinion, infrequently backed by fact.

That could be your preference, but it isn't a requirement, even under BSS rules. Orange hose to BS3212 type 2 is perfectly acceptable for fitting a cooker, as long as the hose is less than 1 metre long and (obviously) protected from chafing.

Not a requirement but Plastimo installation instructions say to use armoured hose. Try explaining to insurers why you didn't, following a fire.

Did anyone say it was superior?

I said I did not like the orange hose for LP connections and gave the reasons why I prefer the unreinforced black hose.

I subsequently noted that it it possible to obtain a slightly different design nozzle for the reinforced orange hose.

The OP is installing a Plastimo cooker, the back of which gets very hot when the oven is on.

In practice the Plastimo (Leisure Products cooker) has the connection right at the bottom of the machine, well below the oven vent, so the argument about heated hose is irrelevant.

I'm sorry to have misquoted VicS - obviously his preferences have little to do with "fitness for use". ;-)

As already mentioned, many may get the surprise of their life when a survey condemns their metal-braid re-inforced hose. It won't be the first time that "official" instructions have proven to be misleading.

Get your facts right. May not be the case with all models but my Plastimo Neptune 2000 has the gas connection at the top right hand corner, as viewed from the back.
