Having just bought my new (second hand boat) I am terribly excited and have been wandering around in a daze with a sponge and cleaning fluid in one hand and a list of "things to do" in the other. One of the jobs was to "replace Camping Gaz cylinders in Gas Lockers with 3.9Kg Propane cylinders" I approached the aforementioned gas lockers, which I should point out are rather snazzy square GRP boxes with vents and things that are attached to the deck just aft of the rear cabin and on each side of the mizzen, clutching my new Propane cylinder and was aghast to discover that the cylinder was a tad too large to slip into the locker. Does anyone know of a supplier of these lockers that will accomodate a 3.9Kg gas cylinder?

Being in the same position after buying my new(old) Nich 38 I found it was easier particularly on my visa card to exchange the propane tanks to suit and leave the boxes alone

I made my own. It is relatively easy to do. Make a mould and then fibreglass. Depends where you live as to best source of resin and fibreglass.

G'day Peter,
Have you considered modifying the existing boxes, inserting a section on each side and the front to preserve the corners. It's not a major project and would cost less than replacing them.

Gosh! This is exciting, my first project in GRP after eight years of owning a wooden boat. Normally, in the wooden boat world one approaches activities of this kind by searching out experts and getting their considered opinions. I always found this quite easy as the experts could be identified by their white beards, pipes and general blueish dress, they also rejoice in names such as "Bosun" or "Old Fred". I must admit to being totally bewildered as to how to start in the GRP world, how does one identify the experts?

Why do you need to replace the Camping Gaz bottles? Unless you are going to cruise in cold climates, camping gaz(Butane) is perfectly OK for european climates. Does your surveyor say you must replace on safety grounds and why? I know camping gaz is more expensive than Calor per kg but when spread over the overall cost of things the difference is very little and does not justify making new lockers etc.
Anyway camping Gaz is very easily obtainable on the continent

dick .. as a liveaboard we find that the Camping Gaz cylinders empty themselves with alarming alacrity and were looking to a little relaxation on the trouser pocket by migrating to propane. After mature consideration and some worthwhile advice from contributors to this board we have elected to continue with Camping Gaz and to eat more salads.

Mmm... Yes, I can see why you wanted to convert to propane as you live aboard. Another idea might be to replace the GRP boxes with purpose made plywood painted boxes; or even the cylinders lashed somehow with a canvas cover over to stop them going too rusty...
Good luck anyway,
