At £14.99 whilst it's on promotion this seems good value and probably better than a lighted match.

I've ordered mine.

No connection etc etc.

Apologies if somebody has already posted this /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I assumed so, but at that price it's easier to buy it and try it.

I'll let you know if it doesn't work. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

No, LNG is Liquified Natural Gas. The detector will almost certainly work on butane but it may not alarm at quite the 'right' concentration. Since that is well below the lower explosive limit (LEL) it probably won't matter to much.
I suppose I had better have a look at it!

I see it also works for propane. I wonder why they don't say anything about butane.

Hells bells! That was quick. I ordered it yesterday and it's just arrived. SHMBO is teasing me about my toys!

I'll go and test it!

It works and seems to be more sensitive to butane than propane.

It also has a static electrickery detector to tell me if I'm about to blow myself up if I'm wearing a nylon shirt.

SHMBO is now complaining that the kitchen smells of gas. Difficult woman!

Read the instructions carefully before testing sensors like this: some can be "poisoned" by the gas used to test and then fail to work when required to do so.

You're right. It does say that you shouldn't bung it straight into the gas flow.

SHMBO is still complaining!

LNG ... is mainly Methane

LPG can be Butane, Propane or more commonly a mix of the 2 depending on country's climate of use.

Generally any instrument designed to react to Butane will work with Propane and VV ....

Take note that gas detectors can be made with "one-time" detectors that are "poisoned" by activation.

This one tells you to check it regularly by holding it near some gas. It's a "many shot" rather than a "single shot".

I'll go and test it again!

It's still working!

SWMBO is still complaining, so I'm going to throw a lighted match into the kitchen.

Nice one ....

So is SWMBO destined to replace Sooty ? And you to be Sweep ???

Just a quickie .. butane, propane and LNG are heavier than air, whilst natural gas as supplied to house is lighter than air ..
as it is mainly methane ...so when testing the maplin detector, you really need to test it with the correct gas

You mean butane and propane are heavier than air. LNG is liquified natural gas which, being mostly methane, is lighter than air.
