Still looking for some advice/experience of different cooker types. The current one is a survey failure (no flame failure on the rings or grill) and I want to replace it with an equivalent model (2 ring, grill and oven). Basically looking at the Neptune or Techimpex. I've seen good things said about the former. Does anyone have an opinion on the Techimpex?
 
How much cooking are you likely to do? Is it on a motor boat, so you wont need gimbals? If it's stainless steel, has flame failure on all burners, drop down oven/grill door, pan clamps, that fulfills it's boaty requirements, show them to your wife/girlfriend/partner (or whoever is going to do the cooking) and ask what he/she thinks. Thats the way I did it.
 
We looked at the neptune and decided against due to what we decided was a really poor finish, built down to price etc.

We decided on the nelson which I fitted last week, much nicer, although did not come with gimbals or sea rails (optional extra). Very happy with choice and would advise you to go look and see what you think.

incidentally I think we also saw the Techimpex at the boat show, looked for 30 seconds before turning away, if it was the one it was even worse than the neptune.

Given that your cooker doesn't have these facilities, what does the survey failure mean in real terms?
- Can't charter
- Can't get Insurance
How does it affect you?

I ask as my Flavel doesn't have these facilities either.
 
Force 10. made in Canada and sold in the US by West Marine and others.By far and away the best boat cooker I have ever had and as a retired restaurateur I still like to cook. 10 years old and as good as new. Spares readily available, if a bit pricey, and the current models are almost unchanged. Can you get them in the UK?

Can't get insurance, at all, four companies have requested a gas safety certificate from a corgi regestered surveyor. All Insurance companies seem to be getting uppity about this subject.

Condemned cookers?

Can they condemn the cooker for not having flame failure devices? I thought that the rules meant you weren't allowed to fit a device like that but if it was already present then it was OK.

I'll know soon enough as I've got to have my gas inspected for my insurance and I have a Flavel too.

The insurers can refuse cover for whatever reason they like.

It would be interesting to know how many accidents have occurred as a result of cookers not being fitted with flame failure devices!

I meant I thought that the engineer inspecting the installation wouldn't condemn the cooker.

On our boat we're paranoid with the gas because our cooker is quite old. When we upgrade it I wonder if we will be given a false sense of security and thereby tend to be less careful.

Time to test the gas alarm again I think!

Give Liesure Products a ring - they make the Plastimo range for re-badging but you'll get a very much better spec/price from tham than Plastimo.

I've had one (it's the top-end Neptune model) for 8 years and it's a superb little stove with FF devices all round, a thermostatically controlled oven and excellent grill.

The only criticism I'd make is that the top burners need regular servicing (only the outside is vitreous enamel and the flame apertures get blocked with ferric oxides) and the grill reflector gradually rusts away.

Re: LPG explosions in boats & insurer shenanigans

I know of at least two - both caused by arses' turning on rings.

I used to have a non-FFD cooker and would strongly recommend replacing - cookers are easily the most common cause of LPG leaks, followed by the internal flexible pipe feeding the cooker.

It's a little late for insurers to only be catching up with this now - it's been a statutory requirement on inland waterways for some time now.

The other reason is that all insurers are so deep in the unprofitable merde as a result of the bear market, that they're looking for any reason to shed risks and up premiums - look out for a rash of demands for:

1. Rigging renewal every 5 years
2. FFD on all LPG appliances
3. "Comfort" surveys from THIER nominated surveyors
4. Banning of single-handed, after-dark sailing
5. Dropping racing cover for sails/masts
6. Increase in excesses (up by 150% in many cases)
7. Demands that boats/crew meet SOLAS requirements for cover outside coastal areas.
