Finally in the process of getting a gas locker installed on Avy-J.

It's camping gaz, so just going for a screw-on regulator (initially anyway) for ease of use and space. I intend to leave the flexible hose on the regulator and change the bottle by rotating the bottle without disturbing anything else.

Easiest seems to be to buy the 'official' camping gaz regulator with 80cm of hose pre-attached . . . http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/campingaz-gas-hose-and-regulator-kit-p293277

(Once I get everything set up and have a look at how it is working I will probably buy a marine regulator and use the 'non-marine' one as a spare, but I want to make sure everything is accessible and OK for space first)

My question is - what type of fitting do I need to put in the wall of the locker to take flexible hose on one end and 8mm copper pipe on the other (outside) side? And - how do I fit this to ensure a gastight seal, just sikaflex and tighten? (Ditto this question for the drain . . . )

A bulkhead nozzle . ( a bulkhead fitting that will make a gas tight seal in the wall of the locker with a compression union on the outside and a hose nozzle on the inside )

Cannot see the point of buying the regulator with hose attached ..... you should replace the hose after 5 years and the regulator after 10 years anyway.

I don't like the idea if spinning the bottle off and on the regulator, although I know others do it. My hose is too short to do it easily anyway. I have a hose clamp, to secure the hose to the regulator, that can be undone and done up again without tools and I always disconnect the hose to change the bottle

BTW Often local suppliers only keep the orange HP hose but it is easier to get the black low pressure hose on and off the nozzles. ( There is a different type of nozzle for the HP hose where it has to be used)

Webby plans some long distance cruising where Calor Gas may be unheard of and most likely to source Camping Gaz along the way.
Sometime there's method in his madness :o

I would still make the gas locker to take a Calor bottle. Use calor where possible and carry a Camping Gaz as a spare and for when Calor is unavailable. Rather than fitting cheap and nasty regulators and changing them later, fit a bulkhead mounted regulator with fittings for both types of bottle, no need for spinning bottles to change them then.

All sound advice Paul, but space as well as availability dictates Camping Gaz - locker depth and drain issues, the curse of a small boat . . .

In other news, what tyupe of flexible hose do I need to connect to 8mm copper pipe? Is this any good?

Double Armoured Hose - 2Ft x 1/2" BSP TM x M Union

You only need that for high pressure connections

To make a low pressure connecton between a bottle mounted regulator and copper pipe in your gas locker you only need the black low pressure lpg hose but as I indicated earlier local suppliers often only stock the orange hp hose ... because of the limited recommended life of hoses.

Sorry, I meant the armoured hose that goes from the copper pipe to the gimballed cooker.

My gas locker's a pain to access, and is set up to spin bottles onto the regulator on a short hose which is quite a tricky feat in the space available. So re-equipping as you describe seems like a good idea. However, how does the not-spinning part work? Presumably some kind of two-piece fitting which is screwed separately into the bottle and then re-joined to the hose? Can you describe (or even better, link to a part) the fittings for that?

Cheers,

Pete

I have to do the spinning thing - 1960s designed boat with no space. Works fine for me. If I could work out how to fit a (decent-sized) gas locker into the hull I'd do away with the curse of the 907 cannister but it's been bearable for 9 years. We keep 2 spares on board in weird locations - anchor locker and under the helm's seat. Outer Hebrides are especially painful for finding 907 gas and we have a list of all the places north of Ardnamurchan we've found Camping Gaz.
