Gas bottle fill Algarve

It was me that told Phil about the refill place, loads of peeps in our marina used it including me by proxy. As to flares, just got mine delivered from Malaga, 215 euros for the offshore pack, thats 6 paras, 6 red and two smoke. No probs. So stop being negative eh!
:)
We all have a lot to bring to the table, including the OP so lets accept his advice for what it is, an attempt to help us all!

Moi, negative?

Ref gas, I would hate somebody not in the know to get pinged. If, aware, the choose to chance it - so be it.

Ref flares, again, just saying it as it is.

Hopefully useful advice.

Whilst it is a requirement for boats to carry flares in Portugal, it is illegal to sell them over the counter

The legal way of getting them is to visit the PSP (police) who will issue a license to purchase under the firearms act. The exception seems to be when having a life raft repacked, no license required. PSP in Faro also accept old flares handed in, we took some there last week.

Thanks for this.

Surprised the PSP issue the license. I would have expected this to fall within the Maritime Police's area.

Problem we have at this end of the Algarve is a lack of outlets stocking flares

I am aware that some folk have taken to carrying electronic flares in lieu of but not sure how the PM view these.

Not suggesting you shouldn't carry them but, of late, I have not heard of anybody having flares (or fire extinguishes) checked.

Three years ago, the PM took our old flares but this year they said PSP now handling them as well as licenses to purchase. Although the PSP accepted the flares it was reluctantly as the cop who dealt with us was not aware the Faro PM had stopped doing it. We bought new in Spain so didn't apply for license.

Gas and flares here can in some way be compared to carriage of knives in the UK, not a problem if you have just purchased and taking home or to the boat but, unload from car ASAP.

I think the reason is the PSP are the national authority for gun and explosives licensing.

I'm told it's still possible to refill gas cylinders at a place in the industrial estate north of Ayamonte.

Refilled homebase bottle today about 3Km outside Olhao. The guy speaks 4 languages & weighted the empty bottles first, French motor home & UK people in another car also getting bottles filled. I asked about a special license, said he'd had it since 1992. 0.709 Euro cents a litre.

Just over €3 to fill a 4.5ltr bottle!

The cost to exchange a 4.5ltr bottle is about €16, or €18 if you go to a marina so that is a very competitive price!

€17 for a 10kg homebase bottle so sounds like i got just over 10Kg. Grp is great as you can see the gas level inside the bottle. Loads cheaper than homebase back in the uk, even with the £2.49 car hire cost

Anyone know of refill station around Almerimar? There is someone who seems to do it Marbella/Malaga way but he's pretty expensive.

I was able to get them filled in A Coruna last winter, so I presume it is possible in the south of Spain, too.
