Garmin wifi adaptor problems. Any ideas please?

So three years ago I purchased the wifi adaptor from garmin to allow me to transfer data from iPad to be unit and vice versa.

All worked fine. However I recently had to restore the system and the unit prompted me to re enter the ssid code to access the wifi.

Guess what? I no longer have the box, and there is no code on the unit itself.

Garmin have said there is nothing they can do.

Any ideas?

I tried connecting the unit directly throw Ethernet, but it won't register,

So far my options are: throwing it away, and getting a new one.
 
Garmin must be talking nonsense as the SSID will be the same for all their wifi adaptors of the same model although the password will be something that you have entered unless it is still the default.

You should be able to find the SSID by typing the exact model number or name into Google.

It's the wifi password that I need. Sorry , my error.
This I think is unique to every unit, however unlike every modem,router I've ever had , the password is not on the unit .

I don't know anything about this unit, but SSID is the name of the network - e.g. ChezOscarpop, MyHouse, Linksys, BTHub4-UHOP, TALKTALK-24AF9E or PLUSNET-8HJUPO.

It might be that Garmin have set up the unit to act as basestation, and you're supposed to connect your iPad to a network named Garmin-1234.

If I lived nearby I'd be glad to take a look at it and sort you out, but technical support over internet forums is frustrating.

Any local PC repair guy will be able to see what's needed from looking at it, but it's not clear to me if you've rest the Garmin unit (and how?) or the iPad.

If you're able to connect via ethernet cable, do you get an IP address? What is it?
 
I've got the MAC address, but it doesn't work as a password.

Stupidly I discarded the box a few years ago without noting the password. I assumed it would be on the unit .

I tried getting into it via an Ethernet cable, but my Mac doesn't recognise it

Does the Mac get issued an IP address?

Look under System Preferences > Network:

Is the IP address something like 192.168.1.100?
If so the base station might be at http://192.168.1.20 - that's the default for Ubiquity base stations.
Alternatively, if you're in the 192.168.1.x range, https://192.168.1.1 is always worth a try.

It looks like Garmin configure their networks in the 172.16.1.x range - try http://172.16.1.1.

I'm not positive about diagnosing this over the internet - I'd want to get my hands on it.
 
Are you sure that you didn't change the password to something of your own? Perhaps try a few of your old favourites.

If you didn't change it and the original unique password is still set then the only way would be to do a factory reset on the device which might reset it to a default Garmin password. However, if this were possible with your device, I'm sure Garmin would have told you how to do it but it might be worth Googling just to check.

I believe Garmin use the Ubiqiti Bullet M2 for their wireless unit. You might find a way of doing a master reset on the Ubiqiti website. The only risk is you might lose some of the settings that Garmin use to block certain packets of data to avoid system overload. It should be possible to connect to it via ethernet but you might need to change your mac IP and subnet mask to Garmin's numbers.
