Garmin to Raymarine data question

I have a Garmin GPSMap 750s connected to a Garmin wind guage and a Raymarine X5 wheelpilot. The gps data is available to the wheelpilot and it will happily follow tracks set on the Garmin but there does not seem to be any wind information getting to the wheelpilot. When I try to use it the messaage "No Wind" comes up. The connection from the Garmin to the wheelpilot computer is by NMEA 0183.
Any suggestions as to where I am going wrong?
 
If you are connecting the wind to the GPS and the GPS to the Autopilot then you are in effect asking the GPS to pass through the NMEA sentences from the wind to the autopilot and I am not sure that it can do that - if it does then life is a whole lot easier.

In my set up I have a simple switch that will switch the NMEA connection to the autopilot to either the output from the GPS or the output from the Wind instruments
 
How are the wind instruments connected? Via NMEA2000? If so, do you believe that the Garmin plotter will gateway messages between the 0183 and 2000 busses? I'm not at all sure that it will - it is not a standard feature of all plotters.

If it does gateway, do you need to enable the appropriate NMEA0183 sentences on the interface? On my Lowrance, by default it only outputs positional information on the NMEA0183 bus - there are configuration screens deep down in the menus that allow the user to turn on the other sentence types.

As an alternative, the Raymarine autopilot computers do have a limited level of gateway functionality included - can you connect the pilot to the NMEA2000 bus instead of, or in addition to, the NMEA0183 bus?
 
The wind information shows up on the chartplotter and I assumed that it would pass through to the steering via the 0183 connection. I guess that the routing could be in the menus somewhere. I will have another look at the instructions.
Any more info gratefully received.
 
Have a look at your Raymarine documentation. The autopilot has more than one NMEA input port and it is likely the wind has to go into one or the other. It's easy to get it into the wrong one.

Edit. Just looked at the x5 documentation. I can't see that it accepts wind input. Are you sure it will?

Wind in the Nmea?

Hi. You might wanna check to see if there is actually wind information in that Nmea. A lot of plotters, ie Raymarines, do not deliver wind in their nmea output, even if theyll show it internally.

I've trawled through the documentation again and it looks like the Garmin does not send the wind information by 0183. The sentences appear to be missing from the list of approved ones. Bugger

Hmmm, not too surprised, I'm afraid. is it not possible to drop the 0183 altogether and do it all over NMEA2000?
 
The X5 only takes Raymarine's version of NMEA 2000, SeatalkNG (or sumfink like that)

Have a looksee in the Garmin to see if it's possible to toggle on the output sentences from the GWS10

Otherwise, I believe you can get an actisense interface to convert the NK2 wind data to 0183

Seatalk NG is just NMEA2000 with non-standard cables - all you need to do is to buy or make the appropriate adaptor cable. We have a Raymarine X5 coupled up to Lowrance and Simrad gear on a mixed Simnet/NMEA2000 network and all the components are able to communicate. The X5 will not accept routing data from the Lowrance plotters, but that is a known compatibility issue and does not work over the NMEA0183 either. If it can accept routing messages from your Garmin over 0183, then it is certainly worth trying NMEA2000 - will only cost you a simple cable and a tee-piece!
 
The Actisense thingy looks like the answer but I will keep investigating the Garmin sentences and have a look at the possibility of cabling to the seatalk input from the NMEA 2000
