Hi, I have one the Garmin Bluechart sd card dated 2006 working. I am happy to sell it to you for £50. PM if you are interested.

Is that possible?

I have Bluechart for My Garmin 178 chartplotter/sounder, 2 cartridges covering the West coast of Britain. My cartridges are hashed with a serial number to my unit. I know they don't work in another unit as I've tried.

It is around 5 years old, though, maybe older?

Yes with the micro sd cards, you simply plug in a different one when going to a different area. There are loads of cards for sale on ebay. Not many Bristol channel ones.

Don't know why you card doesn't work in other plotters, it should.

I have a 276C which is a great bit of kit but mine at least does not use micro SD cards. It takes a proprietary Garmin cartridge which is coded to the unit by the data / software on it.
They were available as a pre-loaded cartridge or you could load your own from PC using Map Source and Blue Chart but I think Garmin stopped that facility after it was hacked.

I doubt you will be able to succesfully find a cartidge from another 276C which will work as when I have had service replacements from Garmin fo the 276 and as I recall I had to get them to allocate new registrations and then reload the cartridge.

That's odd, this is from the Garmin web site re the 276c:

"Add More Marine Maps
The 276C is compatible with BlueChart® g2 maps, which add extra detail when you're out on the seas. It also accepts optional MapSource® data cards, so you can add other types of map data easily. For convenience and easy map transfer, you can connect the 276C to your computer with the included USB cable."

This suggests you can add or change maps easily like every other Garmin.

You can, or at least could. As I said you could load the charts from Bluechart via Mapsource onta the Garmin data cartridge but - and it's the big but, they only work on the 276 that is registered to that software. I think the last Bluechart that was available was 2008 and there are no more updates after that as they moved on to preloaded cartridges. G2 works on the 276 but Garmnin, when I asked them direct, said it was on cartridges only.

Don't forget that the 276C is in any case now an obsolete product. I spoke to the boys and girls on the Garmin stand at LIBS who said it was a great product (I agree) with no direct replacement as yet but probably not worth spending the money on upgrading to G2 as it is obsolete and spares are becoming scarce if needing repair. The suggestions from them was go on using it until it dies on the old basis rocks don't move (I don't necessarily advocate that argument) and then replace with something different.

What may work on a different machine is a packaged preloaded cartridge as in this case I guess you are buying an uncopyable item so it may work with any machine however I don't know the answer to that.

Yes, that's what my card is. I have one card for Scillies to (IIRC) Isle of Man, and another for Isle of Man to the Shetlands. I bought one pre programmed cartridge, and the other on a CD, which I had to unlock by entering my plotter serial no.

They definitely won't work on my friend's unit.
