I have a year old Garmin plotter, is it right i can take the chip to a dealer and they can reprogam it with any updates that have occured to the charts , and how much do they charge ?
c-map do this twice a year, and I think from memory a local chart cost's £28 to update, I would expect Garmin to do the same, but if you are only 1 year old the update will contain very little aditional info, unless you are using to navigate around London to avoid roadworks.

many electronics dealers will do it for you - 25% of the original chart price is normal.
alternatively Navionics in Plymouth - whose charting it is - will do the same by return of post
Garmin do it at Romsey.
I had mine done last year before French trip.
Takes about 2 days but should be done through dealer. Most Swindlers will do it.
Cost, £40 quid for small and £75 for large, You can even have roms reprogrammed to different areas not just updates although this is about 10 % more expensive.
