Garmin networking: chart data Q

good morning,

couldn't find an answer to this Q so here it goes to the experts

IF I network a 3006C (old school propriatery 2X bluechart card plotter) to a newer 4008 or 5008 one (using the new style SD cards)
AND I only have charts on the SD on the second plotter,
CAN the 3006C "read" charts off the net from the SD card on the newer plotter?

In other words, will I be able to avoid paying another 150+ for the bluechart (which as I understand is lower quality data and typically older as well!) and only have one Aegean chart to maintain?

I understand that if I network two 4000-5000-6000-etc series plotters together, I can achieve that. But will it work if the receiver plotter is an older gen one?

I don't know. The networking is by Ethernet on the later models so if your 3006 does not have an RJ45 Ethernet socket then the answer is definitely "No"

You can post the question on the FAQ part of Garmin's website and a tech in Kansas will usually reply with much knowledge. Failing that I can PM you email addresses of some excellent tech people in Garmin (though for computer reasons might be next week!)

the 3006C does have an Ethernet port and you can connect it to a network port and/or chain it in a network with a 4K or 5K etc plotter.
It's not like the (older) 700 series that only use the network port to connect a digital radar and nothing else (specifically written on the manual and the casing!)

so in theory it could work.
However, for example the small dashmounted 2 SD card slot reader you sent me says it's only compatible with the MFDs. So I'm a bit lost.

Basically considering getting a larger preferably non-touchscreen plotter and joining them together (one on each helm)

will try and post on the FAQ once in the evening.

I have practically the same combination of plotters on my boat a 3006 and a 5012. I have a chart cartridge in both, and I'm pretty sure I had to do this because these plotters will not share charts. They do share radar via Ethernet and of course nav data. You can also power off both plotters from the controls of either one.

It's what I was afraid of...

I may just in case throw the Q to the garmin forum hoping there is a recent firmware update that supports it. Yes, wishful thinking!
