Garmin Help Please

I have been using a laptop mapping programe and a handheld Garmin 76 with the proprietory Garmin NMEA to serial connector.

As I have a new Garmin GPS on the boat it would make sense to wire the laptop direct to this unit.

I would like to utilise my existing Garmin NMEA/serial lead so would like to mount a socket next to the GPS to accept this lead.
What I am looking for is a socket equivalent to the one on the back of the 76 (4 pin) and most other Garmin handhelds, that will accept the Garmin leads, I am sure this has been done before so I am looking for help to identify the parts(socket) I need.

chop it off and wire in a telephone lead, plus socket. use the normal garmin cable out from the new gps and connect into the back of the telephone socket - job done. The one from maplin (BD 08J) will do nicely - worked for me

Sorry, this sounds too easy and maybe I don't understand the question.

Why not take a standard serial cable from the computer and wire it to a 9 pin socket that you can mount onto wherever you want the plug-in facility to be. The standard Garmin cable then runs from the back of the 76 and plugs into your newly wired socket.

That way you don't have to bastardise the Garmin cable which you no doubt will want to use elsewhere in the future.

Is that too easy?

This is a quite acceptable solution.

The 'standard' serial cables come in two primary types - 'null modem' or 'straight through'.

To avoid complications, make sure you get a 'straight through' cable.

(Null Modem cables have cores crossed over, eg pin 2 -3 and 7-8 (Tx-Rx and DSR)).

I would contact Garmin UK- in my experience their customer service is exemplary - I was trying to decide what make of new plotter to buy - perhaps I should bear this in mind
