Garmin GPSMAP 520 Q

The compatibility lists for the GSD units don't include your plotter, so conflict a bit with the manual. I'd double check with Garmin. But, as you'd still need to buy a transducer to use with the black box, i'm not sure there would be a saving, although you would have fishfinder display, if it works.

thanks for checking it with Garmin, and ... while you're at it, could you also please check what can be achieved via the CANet protocol?
It is implied/or explicitly stated, that a fishfinder device with CANet (so any of the GSD or a Fishfinder 400C for example!) will pass the date on to any chartploter so that the chartplotter will function as a proper fishfinder!

I'm asking as I've found a cheapish FF400C (not the echo series) that does CANet so I may consider it for the lower helm and passing the signal to the 520 on the f/b.

cheers

I only checked on the Garmin website, they have a compatibility tab on the GSD pages. Not sure about CANet, although i have a fishfinder with it, i've never used it. I have a 324c, which is very similar to the 400c and that passes digital depth to my 551 via NMEA 0183. If you can get the 400c at a good price, it will at least do the same, even if CANet doesn't allow the 520 to work as a fishfinder. Give Garmin customer support a call, they should be able to confirm.

Vas, I didn't read through the complete thread again,
but did you finally find a flush mount kit ?

if not, I can offer you to make one,
we can machine the shape of your plotter in a grey painted alu front pannel,
(grey painted blind pannels available from stock)

just need a acad drawing from the plotter housing

Thanks for the offer Bart, finally found the flush mount kit locally for 20something euro, so will order one soon ;)

keeping the topic in one place, I'll dig this 6m old thread if you don't mind...

So, I've bought a GSD20 from ebay for 20usd or so, opened it up, retouched a couple of solderings, checked it seems ok, fires up so looking for a transducer for it.
Now, measured the hull slope where I want to fit the transducer and it's 19-22deg, so I'm after a
20DEG DEADRISE/TILTED THROUGH HULL TRANSDUCER with the 6PIN round garmin socket

Now, that's almost easy to get hold of if you're happy to spend 200+ and I'm not :D

There we come to an area that I'm not that familiar with and need some help.
black box says 50/200 dual freq whatnot.
I did find a single freq (200kHz) 6pin plastic sensor (happy with plastic as all seacocks will be marelon) for 115USD new
I also found various dual freq 6pin bronze sensors with 20deg tilt for 200+ukp and some 1KW ones for 1Keuro

What exactly do I loose with the 200kHz only job?
Bear in mind I'm not a fisherman (and unlikely to become one, tried it 30y ago didn't work...) depths are 0-80m mostly and v.unlikely to fish with my son at silly depths...

Shall I just buy this 200kHz one or skip?

GSD20 blackbox will apparently connect and present a full fishfinder screen on the GPSMAP 520 that'll be in the upper helm (and via NMEA send depth info to the vaio on lower helm.)

cheers
