hello all,

subject line says it all really, bought yet another s/h garmin plotter (currently have 4 working, one scrap and sold one, need to do some more selling...), all's fine with it except for the annoying fact that when you fire it up it comes with a Bavaria logo screen that seems to stay forever (well, as long as the garmin screen would stay on the boot sequence)

I'm sure there's a way to remove it, but HOW???
Maybe some custom XML file or something? if so, I'd like to change both this 4008 and the 751 to show the MiToS logo that's going to be soon on the transom.

Couldn't find anything googling, only found references to handhelds, sports etc garmin devices.
Any ideas?

cheers

You need a SD card from Garmin with the logo on it. I have a Fairline one but the cards are only supplied to the manufacturers with their logos on them. I believe it is a custom format!

:(
means I cannot even go back to the Garmin Logo???
Not sure i can stand looking at a Bavaria logo all the time...

Just tried (from power off) pressing power+select (and keeping them pressed for a good while) which takes you to Test Mode. All's fine there, even mentions splash image test [passed] but no mention or way to change it...
Tried also a complete reset of the machine (power+Home iirc) to no avail.

If you still have the card, any chance of sending a directory and file list of it? (assuming you can read it on a card reader....)

Ask garmin support. They are exceptional and if it can be done they will tell you how
spot on!

indeed they are and came back to me 2h after asking with a firmware that changed my splash screen to the standard Garmin one.
They politely explained that there's a lot of effort involved in creating custom screens so they cannot do it for me.

Thanks guys!

happy not to see Bavaria on my Garmin screen anymore :D

cheers

PS. If anyone wants to remove a custom screen just email garmin support or PM me and I can send it over (only 3MB compressed

would have been better if I'd manage to use one of the following as splash screens.

Got a series of programs that edit gupdate.gcd files (RGN_Tool, GIR_Editor and an BMP editor Pixelformer) tried, edited the resources within the update file but failed misserably :(
would be nice though...

more failures on the gbox thread in a minute...

Bit off topic but might be worth mentioning.
I spoke to a couple of helpful guys on the Garmin stand at LIBS.
I wanted to know as much as possible about their new Quickdraw Contours facility.
It allows you to "survey" an area using standard depth soundings and create a "user map" of the bottom.
I believe that the data is stored on the microSD card (same one that contains the charts).
The idea is that these "user maps" can be shared between users and their Garmin devices.
I was interested in obtaining the structure of the data - maybe massage it into a format that could be read elsewhere.
The staff at the boat show didn't know but they did say that Garmin would not be likely to release this kind of information.
They make a BIG point about the collected data being "yours".
I just fancy the idea of arriving in a (new to us) bay and driving the tender round automatically surveying the bay.
Then plug the data into the mother ship for subsequent visits to that bay.
If you own Garmin systems on the mother ship and tender, this can be done anyway but I'm not going to change my Raymarine kit.
For me, I might try (as a next winter project) to decode the Garmin data and load it into my PC systems (OpenCPN as an overlay for example).
Just a thought at the moment.

thanks Mike,
wasn't aware of that!

Downloading latest firmware which I guess will have this option on!
Sounds interesting especially if you have a compatible sounder on the tender (so mostly useful for 50ft+ craft as I doubt i'll have a gps let alone a sounder on my tender...)
Also will only work on the new gen of kit, wonder if the contours produced will be useable on older plotters. Good thing is that it doesn't necessarily need a v.expensive chirp sender, even a plain N2K sounder module will work.

yeah right,

updated both plotters to 4.80 released a week or so ago, didn't spot anything different on the menus.
Mind I've got both plotters at home so just connected to power, not sounder gps or anything else.
When they mention software update:
Quickdraw Contours software is included on the echoMAP™ CHIRP combo series. It’s also available as a free software download for echoMAP series, GPSMAP® 7400/7600 chartplotter series and GPSMAP 8000/5x7/7x1/8x0/10x0 series.

do they imply a standalone s/w on your pc or s/w update (as in firmware update) for the plotter?
Anyone tried it and figured out how it works?

They said at LIBS that it was DEFINITELY a software update for the plotters - available around the end of Jan 2016.
They also said that there wasn't a module planned to read these "Quickdraw Contours" for any other platform.
I was hoping that it might be able to work under the Garmin "Homeport" software - that would have been a good interim option for me.

Hasn't put me off though - I like the Garmin kit - I want an echo sounder anyway - and EchoMAP would give me a plotter as well.
Also the EchoMAP outputs NMEA 0183 that I can feed into the DSC VHF thus giving me a dinghy that could be used as a good backup.
If we had a problem on a long passage, a better option than climbing into a life raft.
We have a life raft as well but I know that I would prefer abandoning into a good RIB especially if it was equipped with full DSC and plotter etc.
