Has anyone successfully interfaced a Garmin 128 GPS to a XM DSC VHF Radio??

These are both ideal 'budget' bits of kit, so I'd be surprised if this is not a common pairing, but I can't get GPS data into the radio.

I've tried different connections - grounding either the +ve or -ve side of the radio input (it appears to be a differential input, wheras the Garmin has a single ended output) and all the output options on the GPS, but I still get 'No GPS data' on the radio.

I have not had a reply from XM about this - they didn't answer my query about data format / baud rate.

Any advice from anyone who has successfully paired these units would be gratefully accepted - having had the radio for a year I'd like to get it working properly!

This forum is for people talking rubbish and ranting about stuff like Fray Bentos pies or why President Blair is evil not technical questions so you probably won't get a sensible reply to this here.

Best bet for questions of this type is to post on the practical section.

Have you got the right NMEA protocol? I have just interfaced a Garmin 128 with a Silva 10 and at first got no response. A reading of the manuals, a bit like the runes in ancient Rome, suggested altering the NMEA protocol to the latest. look at the DSC for what it expects, and lo it worked. Thank heaven for a son-in-law who's a WEO. This may well be your problem.

Garmin GPS's (well, alot of 'em) default their output to "Garmin I/O" which is best for talking to MapSource and BlueCharts stuff etc. Have a rummage in the menu's (or even the manual if you are a wuss) and change the I/O to NMEA0183 and you should be fine...

Yes
I tried it at home using the same hardware on the kitchen table and has no problems. Prior to fixing it in the boat.

I also had a NASA GPS repeater linked up as well.

If you send me a PM with an email address I will email a drawing of the connections to you.
I have them stored somewhere on this PC.

The biggest pain is the noise the radio emits if the GPS looses it's fix for any length of time.

Iain. Just tried to pm you on this subject for copy of piccie, machinery not playing today. I am doing similar instalation as yourself (different models, but essentialy the same). I would however also like to interface to laptop with the intention of running maptech. Q. Do i buy the garmin power outnput, gps plug, 9 pin serial port socket. or bare wires pack from garmin and then have to solder plug onto appropriate wires, or power output, gps plug to bare wire then splice into cable find appropriate wires to fit plug to. Thanks rich
