Hi
Have just finished installing a Garmin GPS 298 and Navman 7100, the radio has GPS + and - so that's easy, but which GPS cables to connect to them - NMEA or CANet?
It's probably in the book somewhere, but I can't find it...

Thanks

Nick

NMEA. The 298C has ONE com port available on its power data cable. You need the BLACK (Ground) and BLUE (NMEA out/TX) wires connected to the VHF. The BLUE should be connected to the VHFs NMEA (IN / RX).

NB: Using the SETUP menu set the COM port to NMEA IN/OUT mode (ie NOT Garmin Data Transfer). This is the most common reason folk fail to get Garmin's talking with NMEA gear.

SYSTEM MENU => COMM TAB => NMEA IN/NMEA OUT

This is used to tell this pair of wires to read/write NMEA data, or Garmins own proprietary data transfer mode when connected to a PC or LAPTOP serial port, and using MAPSOURCE to upload/download waypoints, routes, tracks and optionally charts. (Great product btw)

PS: CA-Net is used for Garmin's black box sonar module

Think so. Checked the manual http://www.garmin.com/manuals/1067_OwnersManual.pdf The 298C has one COM port and one CA-NET interface. Many garmins have two COM ports (eg 276C), and the larger plotters have 2 x COM plus one CA-NET. (Have a look at the wiring diagram for the power data cable).

PS: TP Ethernet must be the future anyway for all marina networking and NMEA 2000
