I am trying to connect my Garmin GPS 72H to my PC which is running Windows 7. I have tried the Garmin website which seems to lock-up on every other link. There seems to be no way to email customer support.
I have connected my GPS to my PC via a USB lead. The PC tries to install the associated software but then registers an error. I'm no PC monkey so could do with some help in this issue.

Thank you

Chris

Hello,

I have a GPS72 with a usb cable and have used the software mentioned by TQA. Also check the settings on the GPS for its output data type. I think its under interface type or something.

Success with GPS to PC interface

Thank you guys I seem to have success. Not sure what done it but one thing was to change the interface type on the GPS72H to Garmin and the type to USB. I also did some disconnecting, restarting and a little cussing throwing in for good measure. Now it works.

Thank you

Chris

PS, isn't the Garmin website a bag of ****

Garmin GPS 72H

My Navman chartplotter failed this season and I am reluctant to have it repaired again!

So I'm wondering whether it is possible to connect my Garmin GPS 72H (about three years old) to a laptop or similar and effectively get a plotter with a much bigger screen and other functionality via the laptop.

My requirements are pretty basic - just want to know where I am, what speed direction and a decent chart etc. not looking for fish finding or fuel consumption or anything like that.

I'm not very techy when it comes to computers, so if anyone has already done this then please let me know.

Thanks all

Your better off downloading Seaclear 2 [free], buy a gps puck and get hold of some electronic charts. Keep the Garmin 72 as a back up in the chart table with spare batteries.

I use MemoryMap on my laptop which uses RYA charts. It's good software to use although only has images of the charts (GIF I think they called) not Rasta files. With little experience, what I understand that means is that you cannot select or filter any details within the charts, it's just like using the paper ones with out the faf.
Memory Map interfaces with my GPS72H SO that I can use it like a plotter (not that I have ever used one). I actually use a blue tooth GPS and keep my GPS72H up on deck.
Memory Map cost fifty notes on line and also comes with an android mobile licence. My phone is my third back up.
All in all, I think Memory Map is brilliant and I also think the GPS72H is a great GPS.

All the best

Yes - before I got a dedicated GPS (USB puck style) I was doing exactly that with OpenCPN and my GPS72 (you just need to make sure you get the right COM port and BAUD rate)... to be honest though fishermantwo is probably right - the pucks are so cheap I'd get one of them and keep the 72 as a dedicated backup...

Best bet is to buy a GPS puck with a Sirf 4 chip. These are twice as sensitive as the Sirf 3 chip versions though of course more expensive. They are far superior than what you can expect with a Garmin 72 and will access satellites through steel roofs etc where the Garmin does not stand a chance.
