Garmin GPS 48

Kept on getting "memory battery is low" and finally it lost all its waypoints. As this unit is apparently unserviceable now, I thought I would have a go at bringing it back to life with a little help from google. I carefully cracked open the case unsoldered the internal battery and soldered in a CR2032 lithium battery. I have reprogrammed a few waypoints and all seems well...except the message "memory battery is low" won't go away. So my message is don't throw away your old Garmin GPS 48 there may still be life in it yet.

I'd have unsoldered the old battery and not replaced it for 24 hours. I'd then expect it to do a proper 'cold start'. Or I might have tried removing the old battery, shorting the pcb connections to it, then soldered in a new one.

Mine sometimes shows "battery low" message, when I've not used it for a while, If I leave it on, plugged in to a 12v socket for some time , the message disappears. I also have a Garmin 45 but if I leave it on for days, it still won't log on to satellites.

The battery needs to be rechargeable not a std one. It will charge up over 24 hours and then keep its memory

I've had a GPS48 for ages. Battery low warnings usually happen at the beginning of the season. Garmin's advice is to put the machine on a constant 12V supply for 24h during which time the memory battery will recharge itself.
