I have recently bought an Atlalta 31 that has a Garmin GPSMAP 235 Sounder installed. It came with a G-chart cartridge for the previous owner's cruising area ( North Sea) I telephoned Garmin to get a chart for my area ( Dover/Eng Channel) and was told that despite only being produced in 1999 the model and charts were no longer available !!!

Pse can anyone advise me where to get a supply of G Charts from ???

Many thanks

As rare as rocking horse [--word removed--] I'm afraid. Took me a whole month of checking three times a day on eBay before I found one.

Also be aware that there are 2 different types; G-Chart and Micro-G-Chart which are incompatible. You can tell Micro-G-Charts because they have a letter M in their code, otherwise code is same as normal G-Chart.

Good luck ! If I ever decide to upgrade ( please please Father Christmas ) I think I could make quite a profit on auctioning mine.

Dont buy Garmin Go the laptop route, you can never guarantee that your chartplotter supplier will continue to supply. When you think of the small cost that Garmin could make an interface for to take the newer charts, and they cannot be bothered.

Garmin did not choose to discontinue the G-Charts, it was as a result of a contractual breakdown with the 3rd party cartography supplier they then used.

Garmin then developed Bluechart format in house to prevent this failure again.

Most other plotter manufacturers use standard format cartridges produced by the cartography companies for more than one plotter manufacturers. So supply of charts should not stop even if the plotter manufacturer changes format.

I would always personally put my faith in a dedicated chartplotter and run the very slight risk of a future cartography supply issue that rely on a Laptop that uses Microsoft!!

Didn't know that, but from someone that works in IT software sales, makes a huge amount of sense from practical experience of OEM partnerships. I trust Garmin, as they continue to deliver wonderful after sales service.
