I've purchased a Garmin Fishfinder 100 with the optional through hull transducer to replace a Seafarer Sounder. The instructions for the transducer say it should be epoxied to the hull, but this seems a bit permanent especially if the position is wrong.

Has anyone tried using the traditional oil filled tube with a Garmin transducer or any other non-permanent method?

You can temporarily fit it with silicon grease or sealant, to check it's position, some people fit it with silcon sealant permanently, that seems to worrk, but I would epoxy it once the best position is found. The old oil in the tube still works!

try using sikaflex - I know they say not to but it does work, especially if you clean everything up nicely with acetone or equivelent first. If you want to move it you can slide a blade or a thin wire under it and try again somewhere else.
However cleaning it up enough to then epoxy is a bit of a fiddly job but can be done.
On both my last 2 boats we had all the transducers fitted this way with no problems

I have a Garmin 100 blue, and the transducer is fitted in a watertight box about 300mm from the side of the keel with a cupful of water in the bottom. The signal seams fine with good bottom definition. and this allows me to remove the transducer in winter.

I have a Garmin 160 Fish Finder and I, too, was unsure of where the permanent position would be so I used Blu-Tak. It works and it's become permanent. And, yes, it sees fish and the bottom.
