I have the Garmin 5008 with GMR18 radar, and I fitted this due to good experience of a Garmin GPS, and restricted available space on my current boat.
My last boat had a Raymarine C80, and I have to say that as a plotter I much prefer the Raymarine, being more intuitive in waypoint and route entry, and a much faster redraw (this seems to be particularly slow during route building), however the added benefits of Garmins bluecharts are excellent, such as the aerial photos etc.
The automatic route calculator (or whatever they call it), which calculates your safe route from your entered start and finish positions is an interesting novelty, but I'm not sure I would trust it 100%.
In terms of the radar I much prefer the Garmin, which seems to be much clearer, and if you're fitting it yourself is much easier than the Raymarine (I have done both).
This is really interesting, as I'm hoping to upgrade all the electronics in my boat sometime this year (funds permitting), and have been thinking along similar lines.
My previous boat had Raymarine E80, which worked well as a plotter, but the Raymarine radar did not impress.
Did quite a lot of research at the show recently, and both the independent dealers I spoke to seemed to rate the Garmin gear above Raymarine - cheaper and better. I particularly liked the 5000 series chartplotter.
I will be interested to hear any further thoughts on this thread.

Having owned both the Garmin GPS555 with Bluecharts and the Raymarine E80 with Platinum+ charts, I'd say that they were both superb systems, but on balance, I much prefer the Raymarine.
Radar may be a different issue - only the Raymarine was equipped with it.
think garmin are about to raise the prices.
G2 charts are a bit strange to start with, if you are used to Admiralty style. Its almost cartoon like, but after a few hours, its all quite straight forward- certailny all the detail is there.
