Hi
I have a Garmin Echomap 50s chartplotter

The main cable goes to my switchboard and uses a red, black and blue wire only

Other unused wires are coloured, yellow, purple, brown, orange and grey

I am hoping to connect the chartplotter to my VHF radio via NMEA 0183

Two of the unused wires will be the Chartplotter NMEA input +ve and input -ve

But I don't know which ?

Any ideas

The manual is here : https://static.garmin.com/pumac/GPS-echoMAP_500-700-50-70_INST_EN-US.pdf

See page 4

If you want to connect to the VHF to send GPS data to the VHF, you don't need the plotter input wires, you need the outputs.

Plotter out >>> VHF in

Thank you for the manual - I don't have that one on this yacht
If I am understanding you - I need to use the blue and gray wires to connect to my VHF radio
That is fine BUT I am sure I saw the blue wire connected to something in the switchboard - I need to look again

On the Uniden UM355VHF marine radio side - I have an extension lead coming off the back
It has 8 pins but I can't find documentation to show me the pinout diagram
I need to find out which two pins to connect the two wires coming from the Plotter

There is no grey, you use blue and black. The blue can be connected to more than one device.

If this is the correct manual, there is no NMEA connection to your VHF : Uniden UM355VHF user manual (English - 40 pages)

What is it you are trying to achieve ?

Yes there is :)

I have an extension hanging off the back of the VHF radio
It has 'external speaker' written in it...............
That threw me for a while but on tacking the cap off I see an 8 pin female connector
Two of those pins are for receiving NMEA 0183 from a chartplotter

An extension cable comes with the radio BUT I do not have it

The accessory cable says "external speaker on it, because it's for an external speaker, no mention of NMEA.

The red button is labelled "siren", no mention of DSC

No mention of DSC or NMEA on the Uniden website or in the manual. Seems pretty clear to me it has neither.

No problem Bob.

The red button doesn't help with confusing things. Maybe they used the same case for both models.

Anyway, welcome to the forums.
