Garmin have discontinued data cards. Does anyone know anyone who stocks them that may have some in stock left over as opposed to the usual order as needed. I need the UK and Ireland one?

Sorry I can't help, but Garmin do seem to have 'form' for this kind of thing.
They are a bit quick to drop support for what are sometimes rather expensive products - maybe we are odd to expect a chartplotter to be still in use after 7 years. That was how old mine was when they said they were unable to offer support or repair/replacement.

Indeed they do. My plotter is a Garmin GPSMAP2010, a brilliant bit of kit. I have owned it for about 10-11 years, it has never given a moment's trouble but it has not been supported for about the past four years. My previous Garmin became obsolete when they changed their cartography. So now that I am upgrading my plotter and instruments do you suppose I picked Garmin based on their admirable reliability and intuitive use? I never even considered them - have bought B&G.

To the OP, if you have any success I would be delighted if you could let me know. I transferred my waypoints successfully from Garmin to Garmin and now have over 1000 in the GPSMAP. I really would prefer to transfer them than start all over again.

My son has looked at the Garmin website and it is not the SD Data Cards that appear to be unavailable, it's the older Garmn specific cards such as were used in Vyv's 2010. I also used to have a 2010 and I believe these cards were discontinued some years ago prompting me to move to a 5012. This was annoying and expensive but I do like the kit. As a matter of interest, I thought the 2010 offered better some features than the 5012.

You may find one on ebay. There are some suppliers who often advertise and I think can transfer from one format to another. This kind of thing really annoys me when suppliers try to force you to upgrade/replace a perfectly good piece of equipment by withdrawing their support.

I was told the same by Raymarine with a Radar, and also by Simrad on a pilot.

Trouble is, people want the lowest prices for electronics, so there's a limit to how long support might be available. The other side of the coin is with companies like Volvo Penta, who support their products for decades, but then people moan about the spares prices!

You may not be too late. On 12 Dec (2014) I asked Marine Superstore at Port Solent to get me the latest UK-IRL data card from Garmin, and I collected it from them on the 16th.

I am aware that Garmin will not be doing any more updates to this format - the card is dated Feb 2014.

On a similar topic - has anyone managed to get the data card programmer working on Windows 7 (32 bit version) ?

The charts you refer to were discontinued about 5 or 6 years ago, replaced by the current ones. Is this the first time you have updated your charts?

This is the third time Garmin have been reported on these forums for leaving people in the cart with their older kit.

When I was looking for a new plotter I ruled them out, despite their otherwise excellent products.

A radar doesn't need regular updating, though - you fit it once and use it for maybe twenty years, it doesn't matter if the manufacturer brought out a newer one the week after you bought it. Also, if it does break and you want a drop-in replacement, you can probably find another of the same model as old stock or second-hand. But there's no point at all in replacing one 2008 set of charts with another set of identical 2008 charts - you want 2015 charts in the same format and they simply don't exist.

Not massively different from having an unrepairable Raymarine radome which is no longer available, necessitating a complete system change.
