Garmin Data Transfer

I purchased Garmin HomePort software (Version 2.1.1) running on my laptop (Windows 7). It's great for voyage planning and have loaded 100 or so Waypoints and made up 10 or so Routes. Inserted an SD card in my Garmin 4012 plotter and it duly prepared the card and it placed a file called USER DATA.adm onto the card. Put the card in the laptop and exported “My Collection” file (Waypoints and Routes) to the same location on the card as the USER DATA file. The export file options are .gpx or .gdp. I exported in both formats. Re-inserted the card in the plotter and it does not recognize either file.

How do I export in .adm format from HomePort or convert the .gpx or .gdp files to .adm format? Garmin website is unhelpful and the email to Garmin remains unanswered. Grateful for any advice please.

Funnily enough I had the same problem the other day, despite using homeport for a couple of years and transferring data many times! Slight brain fade on my part I think.

I may have sussed it anyway, I'm going to the boat a bit later so ill try it.

You've had the card in the plotter already so if you put it in your computer it should show up as "GPSMAP ...." Whatever model of plotter you have at the top of the left hand side bar under "my garmin devices".

Sub menus of that are "user data adm files" and "new adm files".

Drag and drop whichever list you want to export, (or "my collection" if you want your entire library) over to "user data ADM files", a plus sign should appear to confirm the drag and drop is legit.

Then a pop up box should appear to confirm you are transferring data to your device/card and give you options like add data to existing file, create new file etc.

Clear as mud?

Many thanks for your response and all well noted. I hadn't tried that as I cloned the original map data card from the plotter so I could keep the original in the plotter and have a map card in the PC running HomePort. I then bought a blank SD card and formatted it in the plotter to use as a transfer medium from the PC to the Plotter. Looks like I have been too clever!

Will try your solution when I get back on board next week. Thanks for your time and help. :)

Basically the file>export method is just for moving data to a file on your computer or to use in another program like google earth etc.

Another way to move data to a garmin device, same as my last post but probably simpler -
Edit: click once to highlight the list you want to transfer, then
click on the transfer button in the top tool bar and a pop up window should appear with a list of devices to send to, it's fairly obvious what to do from there.

What model of device do you have on the boat?

I did similar, I don't like playing around with expensive map cards as I managed to wipe one a long time ago! So I use a separate card for data transfer.

Ok, just found an even easier way, I'm writing all this down then subscribing to the thread so next time I forget....!

Right click on the list within "my collection" that you want to transfer, select "send to your device". Done.

Thats great!! Followed your last and saved all to the data transfer card with no probs. Looks like it is stored inside the file USER DATA.adm placed on the card by the GPSMAP4010. Many thanks :D

Re the garmin software;

I have Furuno and Garmin plotters on the boat but the Garmin is 2012 against 2008 so no contest really. Very pleased with the GPSMAP 4010 plotter. If you max the overlays there is a lot of unnecessary detail but that can be fine tuned.

Regarding HomePort, I have found this to be excellent for voyage planning and plotting and now I can transfer all my waypoints and routes to the plotter, definitely worth the investment. (with a little help from friends on the forum!)

I think in general all home nav software can be a bit tricky to use.
I've been using Homeport for a while now and really starting to like it. Once you work out what you want to do with it and how to make it do it, it becomes quite pleasurable.
It's not overly complicated or packed with features you're never going to use, a useful tool for keeping a library of your data.

When I'm on the boat, I quite often mark various things, e.g. pot infested areas, visual transits etc. When I get back to port I export all the data to a card then when I'm at home I can add it all to homeport, rename wp's, delete unwanted stuff etc. I also export my track history for each trip. It makes the perfect log because I can look back and see my exact position, bearing and speed at any given time on the trip. So perhaps I anchored somewhere for lunch at 3hrs after HW, I remember there was xxx metres on the depth sounder. On Homeport I can see exactly what time I left, use the tide data to see what the height was then mark it with a waypoint and add a note on how much water there is.
I've been posting a fair bit of info on the Minquiers thread recently. There aren't any charts available with enough accurate info to safely navigate inside the reef. Not enough soundings, uncharted rocks etc. By pottering around in my Zodiac with my handheld garmin, I can supplement the chart by adding my own stuff, I can do a lap of an isolated reef perhaps, the track log function will then draw it out on Homeport. Most of the fixed beacons there are inaccurately marked so I can climb up the rock next to them and hit mark, generally build up a better picture of whats there. Talking of pictures, I often take photos of transits, rocks etc which I can now attach to waypoints in Homeport so I have a visual reference to go back to as well.

So yeh, its alright I spose :D

I had a 4010 and a 2010 as back up but as my previous boat had a touchscreen 5012 it was a bit of a step backwards for me, I was constantly tapping the screen on the 4010 out of habit as they look the same

So The 4010 is now the back up and I'm hoping to have a 7012 in by next season. Should work well as I can network these 2 together and display radar on one and map on the other etc and all data is shared between them too
