Just bought a Garmin 750 and having a play with it at home. Flitting about the charting and looking at some different areas that I am familiar with I was surprised to see some areas in North Wales where the drying heights are not shown and I am pretty sure that on the Admiralty and Imray charts for that area the DH are shown. So my question is whether that is just one small location that is iffy or do the Garmin Charts generally show less detail than traditional paper charts?

Because a plotter screen is much smaller than full size charts, detail has to be reduced as you zoom out. The best general rule is to work with the chart colours as a guide for the shallow bits. The plus side of the Garmins is that zooming and panning is very quick.

Check the settings to make sure you get the detail. Some settings require you to zoom right in to get the level of detail.

+1 I have checked our Garmin plotter against paper charts numerous times and have never found any significant differences. Except maybe tide rips & races which can be displayed differently.

Also, you can "Select Chart Appearance > Detail", and then use the slider bar to select the level of detail. This is on Page 9 of my Owner's Manual. Maybe your's is the same.

Garmin charts do this thing where you get an area marked with red diagonal lines in areas of shallow water. Personally I dont like it as this is just the time I want to see as much detail as possible. I have since swapped from Garmin.
