Garmin Bluechart Mobile question

Stupid question time. If you buy the Garmin Bluechart Mobile app for an iPad, can that app be shared with an iPhone such that the same display is shown on both devices? If so, say you leave the iPad on your boat switched on and leave the boat to go ashore, will the display on the iPhone show the position of the boat or the position of the phone?

Dont know about the garmin bluchart app,but i have an anchor alarm app installed on my phone which will send an sms message to another phone when my phone running the app goes outside a pre set circle from the anchor set point. You can also send an sms message to the phone running the app that contains a keyword (mine is 'boat') and the phone running the app will reply with the cooridinates of the boat ,distance from anchor setpoint,and a link to google maps with the position. Its a pretty useful thing.

I have it set to sms my wifes phone,it works well.

Its called anchor watch pro, i use the android version,but there also appears to be a version for apple devices.

The iPhone app will show the position of the iPhone. However, with a suitable Garmin chartplotter you can link the app to the chart plotter using a wifi link which will then show the boat position, but you have to be in wifi range of the boat.

With Garmin Bluechart, it can show either. You set the bluechart app to take its gps position from the phone or from the boat's GPS mushroom. But to take it from the boat, you need Garmin's wifi gadget and need to be logged onto that, and you need to be in wifi range of the boat obviously

If you are in wifi range of the boat you are much better using the Garmin Helm app than the blue chart app, then you can control the boat with much more functionality

That wouldn't work for me. I was hoping that the iPad Bluechart Mobile app would communicate with another device over the 3G network allowing that device to be well outside wifi range. Thanks for the reply and for all other replies anyway

That can be done with other hardware, but not with Bluechart + 2x i-things + Garmin gear, over cellular distances. You'd need to install a cellphone module based talker on your boat (like a yacht sentinel or a variant) then that can SMS your boat's position to your phone or ipad. You'd then want a bit of software to write that automatically (failing which you'd have to do it manually) to a charting app on your i-thing and I suspect that exists though I haven't searched for it

Mike if you're looking for a way to see where the boat is while you're in the restaurant 2 miles away then:

1. AIS tx would obviously do it automatically so long as boat is in AIS range of a base station and you have 3G on your iPhone. You could also set up movement alerts thru the marinetraffic app

2. A yacht sentinel would alert you to a boat movement automatically thru the sentinel iPhone app, but not show the boat on a chart. As you leave the boat on anchor, say, you use the app to tell the sentinel to alert you to a movement of >40m say, or whatever distance you choose, then it SMSs you in the restaurant if the boat moves or the batteries get low or whatever. The app is pretty good and easy to use. But doesn't display position on a chart

But sorry if I'm not correctly guessing what outcome you are trying to achieve. For sure, in your original question, the two i-devices can't afaik talk to each other in a way that results in one of them showing on bluechart the other's position. Would be good if they could - I like the thinking in your question. I'll ask my son if he can write an app for that... stay tuned

This is where I'm really coming from. I don't like the existing Raymarine E120 plotters on my boat; in fact I think they're shit. I've started to think about what I might replace them with and from what little I've seen so far, the Garmin Bluechart system would definitely be a contender. I've started to use iPad route planning at home using the Navionics app but, whilst its useful, of course that app can't transfer routes to my existing E120 plotters. Then I started to look at the Bluechart Mobile stuff and saw that transferring routes from the iPad to the plotters seemed very easy (in fact you showed me this on Match) and I also noticed that the app was available on both the iPad and iPhone. So then I thought that if I started to use the Bluechart Mobile app on my iPad, I could get used to the Bluechart cartography which could help me make a decision on new plotters.

I've always wanted some kind of easy and reliable system which would allow me to go ashore whilst my boat is at anchor and have the ability to check its position on my phone and send an alarm if it moves outside a predetermined zone. Yes there are various proprietary phone apps that can sort of do this but I would always have to leave one of our phones on the boat to act as a base station or buy another phone just for this purpose. I'm not sure that I entirely trust these phone apps either. So having seen that the Bluechart Mobile app was also available on the iPhone, I hoped that it might offer this kind of anchor watch facility but it seems it doesn't. It just seems like a good idea to be able to set an anchor watch zone on any device which is part of an integrated plotting system
