I might have stumbled into a time warp and gone back to my pre-paunch days, but do Garmin still not have a useful android marine charting app ?
I have noticed that MX mariner charts vary in detail depending on whre you are looking. Ok fair enough given how cheap the charts are, but I dont even see the marinas in Brittany...no use as an emergency back up.
So, I am left with Navionics- though why not ?
HD or normal?

Against my usual policy of not paying for phone apps, I purchased the Navionics standard. I did trial the HD, but couldn't see any benefit - perhaps because on a phone rather than tablet? Phone is reasonable resolution however (Xperia S - 720x1280). I've found the app very useful and although I doubt the screen would be that easy to see in an open boat in the sun, it's a useful reference/planning tool and nice to know it's there as a backup. The detail level is as good as the plotter and tides/streams/wrecks/navigation marks etc all listed as per plotter. I tend to preview my planned route etc on the phone the night before as its very convenient means to do so!

Just to update myself in case anyone does a search....I tried memory map but gave up trying to find a chart on their web pages outside uk>>>>
As mentioned, MX mariner is a good basic, but the detail of the charts varies on where you are. In the end I paid 38 quid for the navionics hd.. there are a few toys and for another 3 quid you can add some more. Wind and tide arent on the chart itself, but you tap and get an info box of the detail.
Given Garmin dont even do and android as far as I can see and want 100 quid to update the plotter charts, I guess this seems a good option, given it is now on all our phones and tablets...

I use the standard (non HD) navionics app on my phone, and you can get it to overlay wind onto the chart, you go to menu, then select weather and tides, then when it shows the current weather and tides, you click the wind pane, and it then goes to chart veiw with the wind overlaid on top, and a button to allow you to 'play' through an animation of the forecast for the next 12-24 hours.

LIKE!!! Had navionics on the ipad for ages and never realised this option existed.

Cool, I'll give it a go.
Actually- for others.. it took hours for the charts to actually turn up on the first device... so long I had emailed Navionics by then. It then took hours for the charts to appear on the other devices, though uninstalling the app and reloading it seemed to work. Then the extra add-in app still only appears on some, not all, devices. I hope the actually plotting functions are not so creaky !!
