On new (to me ) boat I have a Simrad RD68 DSC radio and a Garmin 72 handheld GPS.

In order that the radio will give our position in an emergency I want to connect the GPS to the radio.
Could some kind soul tell me ( in some detail ! ) how I might do that.

Thanks

Hi,
As no one has leapt up, here is a roughly right answer - (I don't have a Simrad )

Step 1 gather the cables:-
Have you a cable for the Garmin? (The data cable not the power cable). Hopefully someone on here will help you source just the connector - much cheaper that the cable (~£13ish on eBay). Photo of my home-made in follow up if helpful.
Have you a cable for the Simrad?

Step 2: Wiring
Supply the GPS72 with +ve and 0V along the cable. (Unless you are happy to burn batteries)
Connect the T(ransmit) pin on the back of the GPS72 along the cable.
Join the T connection to the Simrad NMEA +ve
Join the 0V to the Simrad NMEA -ve (I think - someone else may have better info)

Step 3: Settings
Ensure the Garmin transmits so that the Simrad can receive (IIRC select NMEA at 4800baud on both the Garmin and the Simrad)

Good Luck
Bob

Thanks for that info.
Will try to get the system up and running when we get back home in October.
On way to Sardinia.
