Has anybody got a Garmin 5012 which they have connected to a remote monitor?

I am installing a 5012 at the helm and am experiencing problems getting the Garmin display to "talk to" a remote monitor at the chart table, this is connected via a proven VGA-VGA lead.

The Garmin will talk to a dedicated CRT Monitor via the VGA lead but as soon as I connect up my LCD Flat panel TV it returns a message of no signal or signal not supported.

I have discussed this with Garmin who advise the output is 1024 x 768 at 60Hz, the flat panel is 1280 x 800, I can sucessfully display a PC set up to the Garmin output parameters on the Flat Panel.

I have also tried to output the signal to another flat panel TV which again reports NO signal

I am running out of ideas.

Garmins website says that it can output to a pc monitor - is a TV different?

see spec below:

Additional: Interface Inputs/Outputs: 4 NMEA 0183 inputs, 2 NMEA 0183 outputs; 2 video inputs for onboard cameras, 1 PC monitor video output

I have a 5012, and a 5008 and I have installed the VGA cable, but haven't tested it yet. Will do as soon as possible.

Have you spoken to Nick Meadow at Garmin UK? He seems to be the expert on this stuff.

In the meantime I suggest you try every resolution and Hz rate your TV will support. You may get lucky.

Thanks Wally - The TV is set to take a PC Monitor input and works as a slave screen from a PC set up with the Garmin parameters. So I think that should be OK

Thanks SolentBoy, yes that is the man we have been speaking to at Garmin, will await your trials with great interest.

Kind regards Jame

Tested today as promised. VGA cable from back of garmin into my tv which is an avtex 192 with a VGA in socket. I selected source VGA from the tv menu and up came the garmin screen. The tv has an auto function that detects the incoming signal. I was connected to a 5008 and it selected 640 by 480 at 60hz.

Not sure if that helps. I could not do the same check on the 5012 but I guess apart from the resolution it would work the same way.

Hi Solentboy,

Thanks very much for trying it out. Replying on behalf of 01286p - the situation has become even more strange, we tried the Garmin with our Avtex TV I think it is a 151 no good at all, we then tried it with a Sony flat screen monitor - worked well, then with a Panasonic 26" TV worked well, in the end we took it to an Avtex shop, Salop Leisure at Shrewsbury who couldn't have been more helpful - well recommended!!!! we tried it on their 16" Avte Widescreen TV - with very weird results - the garmin was in a 1/4 of the screen with the remaining quarters variously pink or blank - we then tried it on an Avtex 19" Widescreen TV worked fine so breathing a sigh of relief he bought it. Boat looks like a NASA control centre now.

Even more bizarre we then set up a brand new Garmin AIS transceiver - the 5012 couldn't see it, we could see it on our computer connected to the AIS - eventually after much scratching of heads and calls to Garmin it was proven to be an early unit which won't display AIS - they are going to swap it out for one that will. So much for plug and play.

Once again thanks for your input.

Kind Regards Mike on behalf of James.

Glad you got it worked out. As a Garmin user I can say that it is important you keep an eye on their web-site and make sure you are running the latest version of their software. When I added my new MNEA2000 wind instrument I could only get wind data on some of the screens. It seemed that they were not all on the same base software. A download to SD card from the web gave me the latest version and all of a sudden everything works. I check I have the right stuff monthly now.

Also FYI, I have found them very responsive with support issues. There were a couple of small errors I found. Reported them to Garmin support and they fixed them in the next release. Can't ask for more I think.

Good choice on the Avtex. The 5008 looks OK too.
