I would like a navigation system with a detailed colour map. The Garmin 451 looks good for just over £300 - what would you recommend? I'm not up to speed on tech and this looks simple to use.
Garmin is good kit. Have a try before you buy. If you go to a large supplier or boatshow there will be a good selection set up for you to choose from. The 450 may be a bit small display. But costs rise exponentially with screen size.
I've got a 551 and it's a fabulous bit of kit. I looked at a 451 in a shop the other day and the screen does look a little small - might be worth considering paying the extra?
I've got mine hooked up to an AIS receiver which has been very valuable so far.
One thing to bear in mind is map updates.
They're typically about £45 for a download (not sure what a physical card would be). They update twice a year, though you don't have to buy all of them if you don't want to.
i have the 551s , plotter screen and fishfinder screen are fine on their own but using split screen thy are a bit small , ( for my eyes anyway) , so i have a garmin 160c for the fishfindr and leave the 551s on plotter
