After being on six months loan my 45 was returned with the original batteries still inside but completly dead and would not switch on.With new batteries the 45 works except it is unable to acquire satellites even after trying for over 30 minutes. The handbook suggests that the almanac data has been lost due to battery failure. Can I rectify the problem or will I have to send to Garmin

phone garmin first, explain problem, and they should be able to give you the reset sequence, i had this happen to me with the 76, and powered it up and left it getting the sats almanac, but did not reset properly, phoned garmin and was given the resets and booted up within 10 mins....

from a dead start it will take more than 30 mins to download almanac and find location. You can help it out by telling it where it roughly is from menu, but will probably still need some time switched on in clear site of satelites to download almanac for fast switch on next time.

I left my GPS on overnight last time I lost the almanac - result was a much faster system, as the old almanac (10 years old) was somewhat archaic.

Mine did that, poor thing lost it's way I sent it back to garmin, they sent me a new one!
Apparently it's 'cause the lithium battery dies
