I've got the GArmin 276c for boat use, is it worth buying the automotive kit to use it for in car nav? Spending 90mins lost in Swindon prompts the question!
nah, you don't want to go down this route. what's wrong with paper maps, compasses, logs and a hand bearing compass. reliance on all these modern aids is the route to ruin.
The automotive kit is about £150 I think. You can get a Tomtom 1 for £179. Personally I would prefer this or similar as it is small enough to be popped in a pocket when leaving the car - something that is worth considering due to the increasing instances of theft of GPS devices from cars.
Jimi,
I have the car kit and love it. Buy the bag,speaker/charger & maps and off you go. Much better than a tomtom IMHO. If you buy different memory cards you can have marine on one & land on the other. Another bonus is you can buy Garmin map's on e-bay that have been unlocked once already. Remember that you can unlock garmin maps agains 2 units. I picked up the US maps on ebay for $80 for one unit and it was great.
We went out to buy a Tomtom last week, as I have their kit on a PDA and it seems to be OK, although not convenient in PDA form, cables all over the vehicle. However, I was advised that the dealer I went to (Halfords Chester) is experiencing many equipment failures with the Tomtom units. I bought a Garmin 510 instead, £250 including the European maps. Very pleased with it and if it's as reliable as all the Garmins I have had aboard it will be excellent.
Hi Jimi. I bought the car kit for our 276C and it is fantastic. Get the 256mb or a larger memory card though. The only pain is you cannot fit all of europe on the 276C at the same time. UK and France will fit on the same chip. The CD comes with all of Europe, you just decide which areas you want to download to the unit. You can chop and change as you alter your continental travel plans.
I have a Tomtom, have used it for about a year, and have had no problems with it, apart from occasionally she (sorry, she is known as Gladys) sends me up a one way street. But don't buy it at Halfords, they are cheaper at PC World.
