garmin 188c help

about a month ago I installed a 188c plotter / sounder. Yesterday I was anchored in a little bay with the sounder reading 9.7 ft. The 9.7 started to flash and that was the last reading I got. I have powered down etc but now all I get is __ __ __ __.
Garmin is not sure whether the problems lies with 188c or transducer (Through hull) and suggest I return the 188c for testing. Before I do that I thought I would ask you Knowledgeable bunch for opinions.

Thoughts - the 9.7 flashing suggests a weak or lost signal. No signal at all suggests a component or power failure.
