Why don't they like each other?
I have tried to get the GPS to input a position into Seapro but it just tells me "no 8250 present in Com port 1" (there is only one com port and the GPS is in it)
Any ideas? I am using a standard Garmin Serial Cable and a Dell Laptop.

And what about Bluechart cartridges, where are the cheapest ones?

I would suggest checking the baud rate settings for your serial port. Different applications require different settings. Also check that the baud rate output from your GPS matches.

Good luck.

As well as baud, check
(a) the settings in your pc software to see which NMEA sentences it is set to listen for. There are several sentences that contain lat/long, and your 176c will be talking a sentence but the pc might not be listening for the same one

(b) possibly select in the garmin which sentences you want it to talk.

I dunno if (b) works, might not be selectable. I have the 176c too, great machine, but when I plugged into COM1 port on my laptop it worked instantly

The Baud settings are the same, 4800. The NMEA sentences are all correct, I have told Seapro to listen for everything. You can sort of select what you want the Garmin to output but you cannot select specifics ie GLL/SOG You can only select GLL/SOG/COG as one selection and all the other inputs or outputs as one selection.
By the way, Garmin are no help whatsoever, I rang them and was told they cannot offer assistance on PC Interface problems!
Thanks for your help

p.s I am going to Chichester and have been told to keep an eye out for your Squadron 58.

I also have a 176c, but my laptop is so new that they have done away with com ports! great idea! I didnt notice that it did not have one until a few weeks after having purchased. The new machines these days only have USB ports. So the interface lead they supplied with the 176c is useless! anyone got any idea how I can connect the 176c to a USB port?

Eek, you know much more about this than I do Ross. I'd better shut up. Is the COM1 working - do you have another device you can plug in to test it?

The Sq is now supposed to arrive at Chichester 27th Jan (my birthday, tee hee!). I'll believe it when I see it. It's built and shrinkwrapped, just waiting for a lorry, they're all busy emptying boatshow. Thanks for any news/sightings of it (number 74) - I wont be able to get there till next weekend

If you wait 'till Happy1 gets back I am sure he will know/forums/images/icons/smile.gif He has the 176c and more connection cables than I knew existed!
One thing - can you see the unit throught he Com1 connection with anyother software? Don't Garmin have a basic program you can download for inputting waypoints etc? Try that (and get suport on it too maybe?) to pin down where your problem is. At the very least run the latest software update though to the unit to check conectivity - the 176c had an update 11/2003.

Finally I would sugget you go and look on the GPS user forum - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gps-navigator/

Re: Bit worried

Dear moosie

I'm a bit worried about the "8250" message - did it appear on the PC or the 176 ?
8250 is, I believe, the old original PC serial chip. Newer ones should have that capability/ID built in.
Does the COM port work with anything else?
What operating system are you running?
Have you done anything to the port settings or even a self check on it?

Had no probs with our Garmin 48 then 65 and 176 so I suspect your PC
