I have lost the flippin 175, can't find it anywhere. The bummer is that i have 1500 quids worth of charts for it, so i sortof need it. mebbe somone has a cheapy 175 i cd buy.

However, whilst scuffling around looking for it Swmbo found £700 quid, so by weirdish logic i spose i cd have one of the newf 76 models. They're waterproof, whereas the 175 isn't really waterproof at all.

Anyone know anyhting about these? It seems that i have to buy a ton of chart chips, yet again. Or can i buy just one chart? Bit confusing - the charts are all in dollars, but then ther's a cd rom and blanks charts option, which shd be a bit cheaper praps. Best wd be a single kerlunk massive chart, so no more little bags of charts. I spose i could buy the chips for the main unit cept i will only usem once, and then they'll be out of date in 10 minutes or go all poxy after a while like cd's that get used a lot mutter mutter.

The stuff you got is redundant, time to bite bullet

Dont get the 76 imho, you have to put all the charts on your pc then faff about loading them via usb

Get the 276c. I think down to £499 now. You will need new chips (becuase they use bluechart, which are really CMap data repackaged by garmin) but you will only need 2 because the coverage is much wider than the old ones, one chip covers English Channel and one for all/most of med. They're about £175 per chip, so not exactly cheap as chips. I have the 176c (which is the same as 276c, only 276c has some upgrady features) if you want to borrow it for testdrive. Lots of posters here use the 176c and like it

Re: 176 supplementary

ok, any pointers for the chart chips then? there's a "flashcard" as far as i can see, with lots of memory which enhances my digital experience, apparently.

Re: 176 supplementary

Oooh heck. It's all got a bit complex and USB/Firewire-ish. It might be easier just to ask http://www.mesltd.co.uk if they can supply you about 3 chips, one for Eng Channel, one for biscayish, one for med.

But if you can stand the messing about it looks like you buy a CD then buy "unlock codes" then transfer charts from your PC to the blank chip that comes witht he unit. On CD covers all Europe and then you buy up to 3 unlock codes for the following zones:

All seems a right faff to me but you probly have people at work who can sort all this out?

The 276c seems quite a bit upgraded from my 176c, even though same physical size/appearance. It's now submersible waterproof and has rechargeable lithium batry pack (instead of £6/day in duracels). What's more it is £150 cheaper damnit

Re: 176 supplementary

hm. looking further into the site, it seems that it is 175 quid for english channel, another 175 for biscay, another 175 for portugal, another 175 for spanish costas and another 175 for the frecnh and w italian med.

heyho it's another grand day for boating (i.e costing a thousand quid)

You need to use my CMap gizmo for D2's return south. Have ya got on ole laptop at work to use? Wiv a serial port on the back and running W98 will be fine. Or even a new laptop £550 from dixons

Re: Cheaper solution

hm yes,. beeen thinking bout that, cept its teeny bit manky having no decent plotter. There again, no need for a plotter 30 miles offshore, just need a dozen waypoints, and a chart and almanac to get in to port/fuel dock

I have a 175 ( I think ) ... not sure which model as currently in France, the one you had on D2 for a while anyway.

You are welcome to have it ... I've also got most of the Med on charts...

Re: hurrah

Re: hurrah

I'll demo the laptop thing next time at pub. Will be perfick for a once only trip. I crossed irish sea with it, my brother circumnavigated ireland with it. It has all the tiny scale port charts too. I'll show you......
