Been running a garmin 128 connected to laptop with maptec cruising nav charts
for years (5). Upgraded laptop software from win ME to XP pro and now cannot make Garmin talk to laptop. Dont want to revert back to ME . as XP
has more useful tools. anyone come across this problem before-be v.v. glad for
a bit of guidence.

I have no problem with a Garmin 152 and Offshore Nav lite running on XP .. running the serial connection through a USB converter though ...
I assume you've configured the comm port in Offshore Nav correctly.

have a 128 which quite happily talks to the software running under XP. so either its a maptec problem or more likely an issue of com ports.

start>settings>control panel>system>device manager check that the serial usb software is there, right click on it and make sure that it is using the same port as the maptec software is looking at. you will need to do this with the 128 connected and switched oon or you wont see the usb/serial port software.

is your mouse behaving strange. XP has a habit if detecting GPS's connected over a serial port as a Microsoft Ball Point mouse, look under system, if a serial mouse has been installed then disable it.

check that your comm ports are installed correctly, are you using XP service pack2, XP without a service pack had problems with USB to serial convertors as the USB1.1 protocol was not installed correctly.

To confirm that the PC is receiving GPS data, you can use hyperterminal to establish a connection to the serial port and view the GPS data, this would eliminate problems with the hardware and drivers and just leave the connection to the maptec software. if you need instructions on connecting to hyperterminal let me know, i have posted it a few times now but will repost it if you need it

Re: GARMIN 128 MAPTEC AND XP

Thanks for that info Saung, I reloaded the systen to try and fix the crazy cursor syndrome .... and it came back. Will exterminate any serial mice.

Re: GARMIN 128 MAPTEC AND XP

I've found that making the following edit to your system registry will usually cure the 'crazy mouse' issue.

If you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself, buy a 13 year old a Mars bar and they'll do it for you.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sermouse]
"Start"=dword:00000004

Legalise, perform this mod at your own risk, the poster takes no responsibilty or liability

Best,
Michael

As I recall early versions of Offshore Navigator didnt work with XP.
Try to update to the latest version of Offshore Nav.
It can be done over the internet free of charge.
Be shure that you have your XP updated as well.
