I had understood that the garmin would send coords to the radio.
The garmin diagram shows the NMEA wires blue out brown in.
The radio just offers a yellow and a green NMEA lead.
I Have tried these both ways and just get a message on the radio ' no position' but the garmin is showing the correct coords.
The garmin info suggests that ther are 3 NMEA options 0180 0182 and 0183
has anyone any experience with this set up or who can offer any advice ??
many thanks

Thank you SlimRick!! I just need to know which of the radio leads is the NMEA in and which is the negative, they are coloured yellow and green.
I think I read that it is ok to use trial and error to establish this but I will do some more reading.
As the Garmin takes NMEA inputs what useful information could I get it ( the Garmin) to display??
Thanks again

You might have to configure the input/output of the Garmin, which (like the baud rate Joker refers to) is hidden in the menus. You have to configure it to NMEA out. I don't remember offhand what the options are, but you probably want to choose NMEA/NMEA.

I had a quick look for the manual for your VHF online, but didn't find anything. Do you not have a paper copy?

Pete

Yes but it's very limited Just provides a NMEA connection ( yellow and green ) leads and says will connect up to 'most' GPS recievers. Elsewhere it refers to the interface format strings and tells you how to switch them on and off.
There are several compatable strings shown in the VHF menu and in the garmin manual, Im not sure if I should just have one switched on and the rest off and I guess that I could go through the compatable ones ( only 4, I think) until I find one to work.
All made more difficult as I cant be sure which of the VHF leads ( green or Yellow) recieves the NMNE from the garmin ( Garmin clearly indicate that their NMEA output is their blue one) If I can resolve that point then at least my trial and error is halved.
I will try to find the information from the dealer or manufacturer (Italian!!)
Cheers
PS just been on the internet and find a quote from the vhf manufacturer that green is NMEA positive and yellow NMEA negative. I guess that this means the green goes to the GPS NMEA output and the yellow goes to negative.
I have also tried the agents help desk so will wait and see!

Thanks guys. I am pinning my hopes on a sensible response from the help desk.
The diagram I see in Cervinia's link doesnt look like the radios connector ( I dont read German) but rather the connector from the GPS in which case the yellow would be NMEA out ( but mine is blue!!)

Unless there are two neptune 100 radios on the market that diagram is correct Its the one that I used to wire up my radio. From memory there was a problem with the wiring given by the UK agent hence my digging on the interweb to find the settings.
I assume that the one you have is made by Midland

Things to check on the garmin
1:baud rate on the garmin is set to match the radio
2: garmin is set to NMEA/NMEA

There is very little else that can be awray

Just taken the connector apart on my set and the NMEA +ve is yellow

many thanks for your trouble.
So I will try the garmin out ( blue ) to the VHF yellow and the Garmin black to VHF green.
I tried again today but set the garmin on RTCM/NMEA thinking I could have DGPS corrections as well.
I will try NMEA/NMEA tomorrow.
Can I leave all the acceptable format sentances 'on' or do I have to select just one.
Also I cant find the radio Baud rate.
No response fromthe agent yet!!

When set to nmea/nmea it just displays the baud rate on the display 4800
You may have to set none/nmea I cant remember and my GPS has been off for so long its lost its memory much like me.

Cheers Julian,
no, I tried RTCM/NMEA but if NMEA/NMEA worked for you then I will give it a bash!!
The garmin had been set to GRMN/GRMN which is garmins proprietary format for transfering way points etc from garmin to pc. I get the feeling that if I change over to NMEA/NMEA I will loose the ability to download these from my pc unless I switch it over all the time!
Thanks again

I have to change mine every so often thats why I just use the GPS as a source feeding the PC and then the VHF. Use the PC as a plotter but I do have a wheelhouse.
Its only a couple of seconds to change or you could as I do on one boat have a cheap dedicated GPS just for the VHF cost £25 off ebay ( Garmin GPS V )

I switch to Garmin/Garmin for 5 minutes to download / upload to PC, then switch back to NMEA/NMEA as soon as I unplug the PC. Takes about 30 seconds to switch, once you know how to do it.
