Gardner 8lxb diesel engine

Umm, I cannot remember it's too long ago, came in yellow drums.... this is really helpful innit. However it may amuse to know on a pair of 5LW's I had the manual suggested filtering the old engine oil and dumping it into the fuel tank! (I never tried it and don't suggest you do). I had twin 8LXB's on a 62 foot trawler yacht, loved them to bits and have had two other Gardner engined boats.

Found this post elsewhere from 2007, "People keep talking about cheap oil being best in a Gardner, I think you mean low grade and without detergents, rather than cheap. The first fill, and Gardner's recommendation was usually Silkolene Chatsworth straight 30s. This was/is a non-detergent oil, which works at its best at relatively low oil temperatures, but it certainly wasn't of poor quality or particularly cheap; just well suited to the way a Gardner went about it's work. Silkolene is after all a recommended oil supplier for Rolls Royce jets, but I don't think that will be Chatworth 30!"

it in a 50 foot fishing boat we have been using 30 but it user more than I think it should so I was thinking of going to a 20-50,to see if any differences cheers

I bought some Millers oils Superfleet SD30 for another application, it specifically mentions Gardners on the container. Worth talking to Millers, they are helpful and knowledgeable.
