Theres a bit of oil coming out from the underside of my upstairs steering wheel, it's not serious yet, but needs fixing in the winter. I presume it's an oil seal gone on the wizzy round bit. will I get one from a bearing supply type of guy. It says Volvo on the wheel, not sure if that means anything. Anyone pulled one of these to bits.

You can count the number of seal makers on one hand. Take the old one out and take it to a friendly engineering company with all the catalogues. Get them to mic it up and cross match it. You`l probably find it has an application in a ford auto gearbox as well.

Thort that would be the case. Prob wont do it myself, but want to be armed against the nashing of teeth and oos and arr's and things about needing a new system.

Yes, sounds like a new seal needed. The volvo on the steering wheel means nothing. The steering box is most likely a simple vane pump, and pretty much the simplest hydraulic pump known to man. It is very low pressure and probably has a simple lip seal where the shaft exits. If you take it apart (which should be simple, unless of course it is made to be "non serviceable" by being riveted etc, urgh) then you will be able to take the seals to an engineering place to match them up.

Meantime, if it is a slow leak, don't worry. Lots of hydraulics leak a bit. There is prob a filler plug on the top of the unit that you can unscrew to top up the oil level?

Yep, it's only a bit of a leak, hardly anything really. Think I might leave it for a bit. Hardly ever use the bloody thing anyway.
