Galvanizing vs Zinc Spraying....

I bought a rather fine Anchor Chum at the Gosport Boat Jumble on Sunday but it does need re-galvanizing. 'Trouble is that I can't find anybody who can do it within a reasonable distance but I have found a guy who does Zinc Spraying.... he would grit blast it to SA 2.5 and then zinc spray it and says that it is better than galvanising and cheaper ..... but then he would wouldn't he? I know nothing about zinc spraying, has anyone tried it? Is it a good alternative to Galvanizing ?

Zinc spraying is ok, to a certain extent, I wouldn't trust it for an anchor, but for a chum, it should be OK. It is nowhere near as good as a hot dipped galvanising job, where they article is at the same temperature as the molten zinc, which then bonds at a molecular level to the substrate. I would have thought around the portsmouth, southampton area theres a galvanisers, in fact I know there is, because I got my anchors done there, I don't have the address here with me, sorry.

Agree with Colin. There is also zinc enriched powder coating now available that gives salt spray test results nearly as good as galvinising. Problem is application method and difficult to beat a hot dip process. Try

When he says zinc sprayed does he mean hot zinc sprayed?.
If so this, with a paint finish on top, is almost as good as galvanizing but the paint will off course be easly damaged.
The advantage of hot zinc spraying is the lack of distortion that occurs with hot dipped. Not a problem in your case.

Hello Paul,
I've got a couple of anchors to send to the galvaniser and some steel workers I know are quite happy to add a few odds and ends when they have a big batch to get done.As I don't think your chum is in a big hurry, I could have a word with them and we could do a job lot. What do you think ?

I got a small item galvanized about 3 years ago for a fiver by Hayling Trailers. I dont know where the send their stuff though.

Many thaks one and all. Maurice and I are in the same area, both doing similar projects but I was unaware that he too needed some galvanizing done..... I will get a quote for both of us from these guys in Southampton and then decide on going there or Maurice's option. Thanks again.

Have you really found galnvanising cost effective,?? I'm Porstmouth /Southampton.
I know you're on much heavier tackle than me (29foot on 10mm). but wonder about the economics.

I had my CQR zinc sprayed years ago and the zinc coating turned out to be much more durable than I thought it would be.Almost as good as proper hot dipped galvanizing.

I had two 65lb cqrs' done, they have been fine, but for a small boat, I would probably use galvafroid paint on my stuff, it's ok for light work and if you do it each season or two or when it needs it, it's much cheaper. Chain I would galvanise, but I have found re-galvanising doesn't last as long as the original coating. IMHO.
