I want to get my anchor chain re-galvanised. The galvanisers I tried said its a bit specialised, if they put it in their tank the links will stick together. Does anyone know a firm who does this? thanks, Colin

They are right. I have spent many a happy hour bashing chain that has been returned from a galvanizers with lots of bits all stuck together. I contacted MM5AHO who is manager of a metal finishing plant in central Scotland and he explained that it is a special type of rig needed to minimise this. A vibrating rig if I recall correctly. He also suggested a way of avoiding transport costs by puting me in touch with a company local to me who sent regular loads of stuff in.

They too were very helpful and did not charge me to put my stuff on their lorry. The manager there advised that, even with the special rig, there would still be some stuck patches, but that borrowing a cement mixer and tumbling the chain in it for a while would sort out the problems.

I used a place in Birtley, Tyne & Wear. They had a minimum weight condition. Four of us locals clubbed together. They were found by advertising on this forum. I had sticky links. I had to lay into the chain with a big stick to free them up.

I went through all this a few years ago. What with minimum runs and transportation costs it got a bit expensive.

Ended up doing it myself with Zingara - funny zinc paint that has stood the test of the last 3 seasons. Not cheap, but cheaper than sending it away etc.

Steamed it with a wall paper steam in a plastic storage box for an afternoon, pressure washed it thoroughly then painted it with a couple of coats over a sunny weekend.

Ah, just spotted the problem, a sunny weekend.

Really recommend it as a way of getting the result you want.
