With your encyclopaedic knowledge of the London River, have you any experience of the following two marinas? Albeit that neither is exactly downtown, for completeness they should perhaps be mentioned:
Gravesend. Only one gate, so only open HW Tilbury minus a bit up to HW.
Chiswick Quay (the marina, not the pier). HW +/-2

My only info on those two would come from East Coast Pilot.
Thoughts are that both are at the extreme ends of the tide critical Thames slog.
Richmond Barrier is only a very short distance above Chiswick Quay and cannot find anything that suggests CQ accept visitors.
ECP states that Embankment Marina (Gravesend) does not have any visitor moorings, Queenborough a much more sensible stopover .
Having spent a unplanned night or two out on the tidal river, determined never to repeat the experience. :)

To partially answer my own question, further research on their respective websites shows that Gravesend Embankment Marina does accept visitors, with the gate opening HW-1 to HW Tilbury. Chiswick Quay doesn't mention visitors but that's not to say they don't accept visitors. There's also Brentford Dock Marina that accepts visitors.

On buoy moorings further out, I've used PLA Gravesend, Gravesend Yacht Club, Thurrock Yacht Club and Erith Yacht Club; all a bit bouncy but not too bad as the ships are moving slowly there, and high speed vessels not usually there.

Hermitage pier is very uncomfortable during the day due to wash but a little better at night; strong cleats and lines needed, and unsuitable for smaller craft. Imperial pier is a bit better but no facilities and expensive. No knowledge nor experience of Greenwich Yacht Club.
