Galling of stainless fasteners

that IS interesting... does that mean that ordinary molyslip grease would be a good choice?
Yes. The Shell grease that I saw was very heavy indeed but I think a more moderate one with MoS2 would be a good choice.

Oil alone is easily forced out of the contacts. The only galling I have experienced personally was on the bottle screw of my babystay, that had been oiled. It was utterly solid, impossible to unscrew.

Parley revival had the CEO of Selden show them how to rig their mast. He said it was a very common mistake that people put silicon or grease on cable ends of sta lock and similar rigging components and explained why not to do it. The only thing he did recommend was threadlock to act as a lubricant to prevent galling.

I can't remember as It was a while ago. Probably something along the lines of once water gets in the silicon stops it escaping and causes corrosion.
Silicon doesn't seem to stay stuck to many things on a boat.

Apparently the "silicone sealant" that smells of acetic acid, or something similar, is no longer recommended for filling swages as the acid can have an adverse effect on the ss. Have heard this from a number of sources including a rigger who sold me a small tube of a not too strong Sikaflex type sealant that they used.
