I need to replace the worktop in my galley. Preferably one with a nice marbled pattern.

Problem is the ones I see in places like Homebase are designed for a big domestic kitchen, and so are a lot thicker than I need.

Anyone know of a supplier of kitchen worktops that are thinner than the usual kind?

Many thanks - everyone is always so helpful here. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I don't think I'd use domestic worktop on a small seagoing boat. They're only made of chipboard under the laminate, so depend absolutely on staying dry. The shocks and movement at sea mean that nothing stays thoroughly sealed for long, so water penetration is, IMHO, inevitable.

I think I'd use a good quality BWP or marine (ply with formica or similar laminate glued on with a good impact adhesive for worktops. Slather the edges with epoxy and epoxy a hardwood fiddle round the edges and you'll have something that'll look good and last.

The best galleys I've seen have coriolan (sp?) worktops - a kind of artificial marble, but it's heavy and you might want to be sitting down with a stiff whisky and a defibrillator nearby when you find out the price.

Although a long time off yet, I've been thinking about using the marble-like panels in a bathroom which seem to be around 1/2" thick. Maybe something like This

I agree - go for a WPB / Marine ply base with formica or equivalent stuck on it. WPB would do but the much more expensive Marine ply is almost completely waterproof if you get a good supplier. Use solid wood edging and it should last a god few years.

The solid surface you are thinking about is Corian, it can be cut and machined with normal woodworking tools and can even be sanded if the surface gets marked in time.

Have a look at Corian worktops with prices for colours and prices.

Having recently had the same problem, overcame with the use of black marble fire surround, about 6mm thick, and was supplied in 4'x 3' sheet @ 13.95. ex Homebase. glued on to 12mm m.Ply. Heat resistant (exceeding) tough, and needed slow speed on jigsaw for cutting purposes. HTH
