Galley Worksurface

We originally wanted Corian but found it just too expensive. Found a much cheaper alternative called "Poly-Wood". It's only available in white, grey and beige and we've used it in heads and galley. Here's a pic of galley being constructed.

It can but cut with woodworking tools and seems to scrub up well. We've lived aboard since launch in 2004 and it still looks ok despite daily use.

Vetus are the UK distributor.

I recently refurbished our galley using gloss black laminate bought from Robins. The hob was replaced by a domestic 'domino' flush black ceramic one with touch controls and the sink/tap by polished s/s ones from a caravan shop - cheaper than the diy place. I am quite surprised at how good the end result looks (unlike most things I do).
The main problem I had was how to cut the laminate to fit the top which butts up against the cupboards. I solved this by making a template of the worktop edge out of strip timber, triangulated with diagionals to ensure it was rigid. The laminate was then clamped to it and a cylindrical router bit with a wheel guide used to trim the perimeter. Perfect fit - second time. The first time I hadn't noticed the knot which fell out as the router passed over it

Stainless steel(cut with a grinder) glued with polyurethane glue to waterproof plywood and edged with one inch thick X 2 inch high maple!

Stainles steel from scrap yard and probably from a fast food outlet. Easily polished after fitting and before edging, with soft polishing disk on a grinder.

I bought white formica from Jewsons on a roll for very little money. I cut it with sharp scissors and used contact adhesive onto the old surfaces. Worked well

I've recently done mine with 30cm square granite tiles, 10mm thick. Butted tightly up against each other with a splashback of the same material. Bedded on appropriate silcone, easy to cut with a small diamond wheel and looks great. have a look on ebay for cheap offers.

Re:Galley worksurface

Why not cover the existing worksurfaces with 8mm thick quartz sheet.
I fit this over existing kitchen Worktops in the west midlands, it comes in a variety of colours and is waterproof and very stain resistant. It can be cut to your template and even folded over an edge then bonded in place with an epoxy glue/resin or silicone. It just needs a sound dry base to adhere to and when fitted a thin bead of silicone around edges to prevent water getting underneath.
A web page with more info is being completed at the moment and should be on-line this week.

Hope this helps
