Its winter (okay, autumn but it feels like winter) and time for more destruction on Spectrum Too as we drag her into the new century.

The last remaining project is the 1970's galley and the problem is finding a new sink with drainer (SWMBO insists on a drainer) to replace the old sink. Naturally space is tight!

Any ideas on suppliers? Google just seems to throw up loads of boats for sale all fitted with nice sinks...

Mike - Try Camping and General down on Canvey ISland. Good selection and cheap, Or there is another big caravan place near Gillingam on the old A2 which is housed in an old cinema. If you come off the M2 at the Gillingam turnoff, go to the main A2 roundabout and turn left back towards Chatham. About 800 yards from there.

Had you thought about...

Had you thought about having a small double sink instead of a sink + drainer? A second sink is very useful and can easily be used to drain pots (or even to rinse them). Also, stuff doesn't slide off when it's choppy.

Re: Had you thought about...

I agree. Our draining rack sits in out second sink. Works perfectly and leaves you with more options - depends how much room you've got though.

The only problem with some caravan style sinks is that they are not deep enough. If you ever start doing any cooking/washing up at sea, the advantage of a proper deep sink are self evident. If you are coastal hopping, and you don't mind, save your money by going to the caravan shop!

Re: Had you thought about...

Saw a company based on Hayling Island who did all sorts of SS sinks & kit .. import it all from Italy .. can't remember the name but will have a look later.

We're re fitting our galley too and had the same problem. We found the answer in IKEA

Single sink with drainer 700mm x 458mm complete with waste outlet.......£40.00

Personally I think 2 sinks are a waste of space, the drainer provides useful worktop area as well as drainer.

Our first sink was from a caravan shop, but was really too shallow, so we pulled it out when we rebuilt the galley and replaced it with one from a company called Penguin I think.

If I were you go with a pair of round sinks, one deep, one shallow. use the shallow one as the drainer and fabricate a cover so it can be used as workspace when not in use.

Word of warning make sure your plates fit -- we have been looking for smaller plates for a year now as ours are just too big to fit all the way in.

The other thing we learned from our first galley is that regular kitchen countertops are useless. We used regular stuff, epoxied on the cut edges, but after a year it started to swell.

We replaced that with teak epoxied to ply finished in thinned varnish and is looking rather nice.

All the best,

Nick

Dop it in Corian, then you have a a top job and you can have anything made any size any colour. Stefan, who hangs out on MoboChat, has just done this on his boat and it looks fantastic

And make sure that your plates don't fit; well, not exactly, anyway. Round plates fitting in to a tapered round sink can be a recipe for trouble.
