Anyone know the owners of the gaffer ' Cloud' on a mooring in Falmouth? They are my next door neighbour and having noticed that I had loads of lovely pics of their boat (in sunrises etc) I made them up a disk of 70 odd shots taken over the season and planned to leave it in their cockpit with a note. Their mooring is now empty and they may have lifted for the winter ( or be away I suppose?). Seems a shame not to get it to them. There are some great shots of the Red Arrows formating right above them etc. Anyone know them? :)

I imagine I'm not the only one who'd appreciate seing some of your pics on 'ere.....

And maybe a couple of shots of the view from your 'office'. ;)

The back stay and low spreaders in the first pic make her look like a Bermudan?

Agree. No way you could hoist a normal gaff on that mast.

Being a gaff cutter sort of hull but a bermudan mainsail, and that bumkin, made me think of the Pardeys' boats. And sure enough, there seems to have been a Lyle Hess cutter called Cloud:

I'm not about to hand over seven quid for that article, though :)

Yeah it could be... I've never seen her under way, she just appears and disappears. My brother insists she is a gaffer but he may be off. I thought similar when looking at the pics again. I normally look right past her at the sky :) :)

He is - the spreaders and the backstay would completely obstruct the gaff :)

Not a completely stupid mistake though, as the hull form is very much that of a gaff cutter. Lyle Hess originally drew a boat in that style with a suitable gaff rig; Larry Pardey bought the plans to build another, but then asked Hess to design a bermudan rig for her after he met his wife Lin and worried that she might struggle with the original (probably an unnecessary worry, I suspect). They later asked for a bigger boat in the same style. Cloud is a Lyle Hess design (according to the article linked above) and if she's not one of the versions drawn for the Pardeys then she's very much inspired by them. The triangular bumpkin to get the backstay out past the long gaff-style boom is quite distinctive.

I certainly agree that she seems to be bermudan-rigged. But it does look from her hull that she was designed as a gaffer, and that someone converted her rig for the sake of 'simplicity' while retaining her gaffer's mast. So the hull looks to me as though it would be under-canvassed in consequence.

(BTW I suspect Buchanan was using triangular bumkins before Hess.)

But they're nice photos though, and I'm sure her owner would be pleased to have them if you can find him.

Kev - she was in Mylor over the weekend. I think she's been lifted out there. Speak to Mylor Yacht Harbour.

I've called MYH and she's with them for the winter. They'll be happy to forward the disc on if you can get it to them.
