Last year I bought a G4 Led replacment bulb... one of those side pin jobs that replaces the liittle bulbs....

Anyways... toooo blue/cold and no were near to bright enough....

I understand that there are better ones available now... I want some that are a nice warm colour... and that give off loads of light!

Recommendations please!

Aten lighting, on E bay or google, go for the "soft" light ones, 10 surface mount LED's is 20w equivalent and it is! Just done the whole boat.

what size as i kno sombody who has 10w equ for sale as he changed to 20 w

I used these http://www.searolf.com/page15.html from Searolf in my cabin lights and I am pleased with the results. I used the warm white version and, if anything I think they may be a bit warmer than halogen, there is none of the typical LED blueness. They are claimed to equal the light output of a 25 watt incandescent bulb. I'm not sure about that but they give a better light than the 10 watt halogen bulbs I replaced, and at a fraction of the current drain. The light output may possibly be a shade more directional than a filament bulb, depending on the fitting in which they are placed. My fittings are about 4 to 5 feet apart and the coverage is satisfactory.

it is not just brightness it is also colour and colour rendering. Colour = shade Colour rendering is % of visible wavelengths present in light source. Natural daylight =100.

I have found a diy product from GE it is really bright and is available in three colours, three wattages and 2 colour renderings. There is a trade off between colour rendering an hightout put. So the problem is that most of the no-name leds have either poor colour or poor colour rendering or both.

I was going to convert one of my 10W halogen fittings and report back here, but since this has been posted I will post some photos tomorrow. They are not cheap, but I think the GE product may be what we have all been looking for.

Here is a photo of the GE chip it measures about 25.4mm square so you can see that the actual LED is very large. They are available in three wattages 1.2W 3.6W and 7.2W. The choice of colours is Warm White 3000K, White 3500K and cool white 4000k. Most unbranded LED's listed as "White" are in fact Daylight and about 7000K (Very blue).

The GE chip is available with a CRI of 70 or 85. My plan is to try the 85CRI 3.6W warm White chip. Officially this gives of 142 lumens as compared to 250 lumens on a 20W Halogen. However the halogen lamp throws light out in all directions and much of the light is lost as the reflectors are not very efficient in the shallow fittings used on boats. The 70CRI version is much brighter giving off 188 lumens, but the halogen lamps have a CRI of 100, and I don't think that a 70 CRI is good enough for me, 70 is the same as a poor fluorescent. The good fluorescent tubes used in supermarkets have a CRI of 85.

Hi Doug

We've now replaced all the internal bulbs now with these http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/warm-white-bulb-8v30v-13w12w-p-1456.html We can't really tell the difference from the standard tungsten halogen (or whatever they are on the Bavs as standard).

We tried one of these slightly brighter ones (they use slightly more power) http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/ultimate-with-leds-side-pins-warm-white-18w15w-p-1692.html but in fact the plastic reflector actually masks some of the reflector in the Bavaria fitting, so the overall result is no brighter.

Cheers
Ann

Hi, I've replaced my halogen bulbs with LED replacements from this dutch company:

http://mp.yvora.nl/index.php?ID=44

The warm white ones with G4 base that I chose give off a very pleasant light. Brightness is not extreme, but roughly like a 10W halogen bulb. Dont know if they are available in the UK, though.

had 20 of these on board for a year now, very impressed with the colour and brightness

and so far no failures - even when run at 14.9V on shore power equilibrium charge cycle

Edit: checked the latest ebay offering and they are not the same led - it's grown a large capacitor on the back

Edit: These are the ones : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10X-G4-12...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2eca0295e0

you can also look in www.eachbuyer.com they have all sorts of "stuff" including 12v LED

+1 for Ultra Leds. What you're seking is "warm white" (2700 - 3000K) whereas what you have is almost certainly cool white (~6000K). Don't ask me why we perceive the lower colour temperatures as cooler, that's just the perversity of humans.

For brighter, you just want more leds in the replacement bulb. For equivalent light output with warm white you want around 1/9 to 1/10 the power of the incandescent original.

Hope this helps.

These http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400477497175?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 give a terrific light. However I did get some interference on my car type radio, probably due to a poor aerial, and with the capacitor on the back they were too deep to go into my fittings. They didn't affect the VHF or the AIS.
I've now got these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200947882845?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 that give a bit less light but fit and don't cause interference. As my charger doesn't go to silly voltages I don't mind them just being resistive. They don't get too hot.

PS - the ones with the capacitor on the back will fit the ceiling lights used in Bavarias circa 2005, those are bigger than my little AquaSignal ones in a Jeanneau. My pal is now happily using them.

it's because the hotter something gets, the less red it becomes, think of dimming a normal light bulb, it starts glowing red, then gets whiter as it gets brighter. Colour temp is the colpur a black body gives off when heated, and is white white hot is hotter that red hot.
